Reports say that Football Legend Pele has been moved to palliative care in the hospital because his cancer is no longer responding to chemotherapy.
Folha, a Brazilian news site, says that Pele has been “moved into palliative care” and is “no longer responding to chemotherapy.”
The most recent official medical report from the Albert Einstein Hospital in Sao Paulo, where Pele was taken back on Tuesday, said that his condition was stable.
Folha has said, though, that the 82-year-old man’s bowel cancer is no longer responding to the chemotherapy he’s been getting since September. He won’t get any more invasive tests or treatments because he’s in end-of-life care.
Fans held up a banner with a message of support for the former striker before Brazil’s World Cup game against Cameroon on Friday.
Pele also thanked people on Instagram for the “Get well soon” message that was shown on a building in Qatar, where the World Cup is happening. In the post, he wrote that he was going to the hospital for his “monthly checkup” and thanked everyone for sending him “good vibes.”

Pele won the World Cup three times while he was playing soccer. He won it for the first time when he was only 17 years old, in 1958. He also won it in 1962 and 1970. He played for Brazil and scored 77 goals in 92 games. He is considered one of the best players of all time.
