Before the 2022 World Cup, Qatar was criticized from all over the world for using modern-day slave labor. Now, a Qatari official has admitted that “between 400 and 500” migrant workers died as the country prepared for soccer’s biggest tournament.
Qatar is upset that it is getting “unprecedented” criticism before the World Cup, which is being run by slaves.
During an interview with Piers Morgan, Hassan Al-Thawadi, the secretary general of Qatar’s Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy, gave the number.
Thawadi told Morgan, “I think it will be around 400.” “Between 400 and 500. I don’t know the exact number, but that is something being talked about.”
Thawadi then had the nerve to say, “One death is too many” after admitting that up to 500 people died while building structures for a sports event.

The fact that a Qatari official said 400 to 500 migrant workers died is surprising for two clear reasons. First of all, Qatar doesn’t admit when it’s wrong because it’s always trying to show the rest of the world that it’s a better country. Second, the 400-500 number is much higher than the numbers that officials had given before.
Since World Cup construction began in 2014, Qatar’s Supreme Court Committee has said over and over that only three people have died on the job and 37 people have died in other ways.
Qatari officials have been lying from the start, which is not at all surprising. Thawadi’s admission that more than 500 migrant workers have died is a start, but it’s not a secret that even this number is probably much lower than the real number of deaths.
Qatar brought in 30,000 people from other countries to build the seven World Cup stadiums and then paid these “slaves” a very low wage. If these workers complain too much about their work conditions or pay, they may be arrested and hurt physically.
The way Qatar and other Gulf Arab states hire workers from other countries is called “kafala.” Companies pay for foreigners to get work and residency permits. Those foreigners then come to Qatar with the help of the money they got from the companies. The kafala makes these workers the property of the companies that pay for them, who can then have them arrested or sent back to their home countries.
