Twitter Locks Staff Out of Offices until November 21

Twitter told its employees that its office buildings will remain temporarily closed, effective right away.

The employees received a message informing them that the offices would reopen on Monday, November 21, according to a report of BBC.

It did not state why it was moving.

The statement comes as there are rumors that several employees were leaving after the new owner, Elon Musk, told them to commit to “long hours at high intensity” or quit.

The note continued, “Please continue to abide by business policy by declining to share private corporate matters with the media, on social media, or in any other manner.”

According to sources, Mr. Musk told Twitter employees last week that they would “need to be pretty hardcore” or commit to working long hours or leave the company.

The company’s new owner requested employees’ consent to the promise in an email to the staff, according to the Washington Post. Mr. Musk stated that those who didn’t sign up by Thursday, November 17 would receive three months’ worth of severance money. The corporation said earlier this month that it will be laying off almost 50% of its workers.

The news coincided with indications that several employees had already left in protest at Mr. Musk’s new contract terms.

To announce their departure from the company, employees have begun tweeting using the hashtag #LoveWhereYouWorked and a saluting emoji.

The memo also said, “Please continue to abide by the Twitter policy by not disclosing private material on social media, with the press, or elsewhere.”

According to some with knowledge of the situation, key personnel were called into meetings as the deadline on Thursday night drew closer to hear pitches on the social network’s future. In a follow-up email on Thursday, Mr. Musk, who had before declared that he was categorically opposed to remote work, softened his stance.

He said that employees should meet in person with their coworkers at least once a month. “All that is necessary for approval is that your boss takes responsibility for ensuring that you are making a great contribution,” he wrote.

It wasn’t sufficient. Employees flooded Twitter’s internal messaging systems with the salute emoji, which has come to represent leaving the business. Together with their internal Slack communications, former employees also tweeted the homage to the public.

According to those acquainted with the situation, several departing employees believed that because so many were leaving and taking with them their understanding of the product’s functionality, the social network could find it difficult to update systems or solve issues during regular business hours.
