Superman is all-powerful, but there are two things that can hurt him: kryptonite and problems behind the scenes in Hollywood. But Henry Cavill’s Man of Steel, who hasn’t been seen since 2017’s Justice League except for 2021’s Zack Snyder cut, may have found a way to survive Hollywood’s kryptonite.
Is there really a chance that Henry Cavill will return as Superman?
According to an article in The Hollywood Reporter, the top people at the newly reorganized Warner Bros. Discovery want Henry Cavill to play Superman again in a movie that “would basically be Man of Steel 2.” Dwayne Johnson, who plays the lead in DC’s next movie, Black Adam, may have played a role in getting this idea back on track.
Also, according to David Faraci on the Marvelvision podcast, Johnson was adamant that Henry Cavill make a cameo in Black Adam to set up this dream showdown between Superman and Black Adam, but THR says that DC Films head Walter Hamada strongly objected. But “The Rock” asked other Warner Bros. Pictures executives for the scene, and it was finally filmed in September, just a few weeks before Black Adam was set to come out on October 21. Hamada, who has been with DC Films since 2018, is about to leave the company after the release of Black Adam.
Hamada had other ideas for Superman before he made it. The Hollywood Reporter said last spring that the executive wanted to hire a Black director and a Black main character to play the role. The screenplay would be written by famous author Ta-Nehisi Coates, and JJ Abrams would be in charge of making the movie. That would have ended Henry Cavill’s time playing the role. But since that update, there hasn’t been much news about this project, so Cavill could still come back.
In another part of the article, THR said that James Gunn is also in talks with Warners about new movie projects, but they didn’t say who the characters are. Matt Reeves, who is directing the hit Batman movie with Robert Pattinson in 2022, is working on expanding the DC Comics movie universe to include the character’s many enemies, like the Scarecrow.
With Warner Bros. Pictures leaders Pam Abdy and Michael De Luca at the helm, DC seems to be focused on making as many movies and TV shows as possible. No longer does one director, Zack Snyder, decide the whole creative direction of the DCEU. Now, different branches of the universe are given to different directors and producers. But will they all get their own courts in the end?
