After their talismanic No. 10 converted a penalty to follow up on an implausibly unbelievable assist for Nahuel Molina in the first 45 minutes, the Albiceleste appeared to be in trouble late in the second half.
However, the game’s outcome was altered when Dutch player Wout Weghorst entered the action and quickly nodded in what at first appeared to be little more than a consolation goal.
The former Burnley striker forced extra time by pushing a finish in during the final minute of added time because Argentina could not handle his aggressiveness. However, that ultimately just served to prolong the Netherlands’ suffering as Emiliano Martinez pulled off two more miraculous saves on penalty kicks to advance Argentina to the round of eight.
And because Zlatko Dalic’s team pulled off yet another surprise in the day’s previous game, they will play Croatia there rather than their longtime rivals Brazil.
