‘KGF: Chapter 2 Review’: The Film Appears to be a Magnificent

Film: K.G.F: Chapter 2

Duration: 168 minutes

Director: Prashanth Neel

Cast: Yash, Sanjay Dutt, Srinidhi Shetty, Raveena Tandon, Anant Nag, Prakash Raj, Archana Jois, Ramesh Indira, Ramachandra Raju, Rao Ramesh

For those unfamiliar with the Kolar Gold Fields, K.G.F. stands for Kolar Gold Fields. This film is a sequel to ‘K.G.F: Chapter 1’, which was released in 2018.

The film picks up where it left off in the first segment, with a timeframe spanning 1951 to 1981 and a non-linear narrative.

The night after narrating the events in Chapter 1, Anand Ingalagi, the author of the book El Dorado, suffers a stroke.
The narration is taken over by his son Vijaayendra Ingalagi (Prakash Raj). He goes on to tell us about Rocky, the kingpin of Kolar Gold Fields, who was dubbed the “Biggest Criminal” by the country’s authorities, the “Biggest Businessman” by his colleagues, and the messiah of the oppressed at Kolar Gold Fields.

He explains how Rocky was able to maintain his dominance over his opponents and government authorities while simultaneously coming to terms with his background.

The story takes us from Kolar to Paali to Varca, through Surat, UAE, Delhi, Banglore, and Bombay, with much of dramatic and amusing dialogue.

KGF: Chapter 2 Begins in a Dramatic, and Verbose

The film begins in a dramatic, verbose, and loud tone, as if it were a magnum opus. Gradually, you realize that the telling is the source of its demise. Onscreen, the film appears to be a magnificent, hyper-active montage laid over a voice-over due to the passive narrative.

The action sequences, combined with the accompanying high-pitched music, make you care less about the characters. In addition, the fight sequence in the conclusion appears to be an action jamboree, with no clear indication of who is fighting whom. In most cases, the emotional bond is broken.

Yash Displays Variety of Emotions

Yash is skilled at portraying a variety of emotions, from brutally harsh and intimidating to empathetic and a little foolish at times. He lacks the persona of a larger-than-life superhero or anti-hero, despite his sleek, rough, and gruff appearance.

With his tattooed face and braided haircut, Sanjay Dutt as Rocky’s opponent Adheera makes a larger effect; yet, his character is badly developed and consequently appears on screen primarily for the action moments.

Raveena Tandon’s impassioned expression endears the fearsome Prime Minister Ramika Sen to the audience. It’s fascinating to see how she conducts herself when dealing with anti-social individuals. Unfortunately, she only appears in the second half of the movie, when the audience’s attention has waned.

Srinidhi Shetty, who plays Reena, Rocky’s love interest and later wife, gives a heartfelt performance but is let down by the screenplay.

Others in supporting roles appear to be a good fit for their characters, and they all give it their all in their performances.

KGF: Chapter 2 has Excellent Production Values

The visual effects can be a little flat at times. The cinematography of Bhuvan Gowda is the only redeeming feature of this film. He expertly portrays the stunning settings as well as the people’ emotions. His frames appear to be exact reproductions of famous works of art, picture-perfect and poster-worthy.

Despite Ujwal Kulkarni’s superb editing, the film does not appear to be seamlessly blended. The visuals appear to be abruptly interspersed with blank screens as the audio plays in the background at times.

Overall, only lovers of ‘K.G.F: Chapter 1’ may enjoy this film.
