The founder of Amazon.com Inc. and the fourth-richest person in the world Jeff Bezos says he wants to give away most of his money during his lifetime.
Jeff Bezos told CNN that he will use the money to fight climate change and help people who can bring people together despite deep social and political divides. This is the first time the billionaire has made such a promise.
According to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, Jeff Bezos is worth $123.9 billion. His wealth has gone down by almost $70 billion this year, but it has grown a lot in the last ten years as his e-commerce company has beaten out competitors.
People have criticized Bezos, who is 58 years old, for not signing the Giving Pledge. This is a promise by many of the world’s richest people to give most of their money to charity. He mostly ignored philanthropy for many years and focused on Amazon and Blue Origin, his for-profit space exploration company.
But in the last few years, Jeff Bezos has given away billions of dollars to charity, and since he quit being Amazon’s CEO last year, he has given even more.
Since they broke up in 2019, his ex-wife MacKenzie Scott has given more than $12 billion to nonprofits. She has mostly given to smaller US charities that are often overlooked by bigger donors.
Jeff Bezos has put his $10 billion Earth Fund and $200 million gift to the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum toward fighting climate change.
As part of the Courage and Civility award, he just gave Dolly Parton $100 million to give to any charity she wants. He and his partner, Lauren Sanchez, made the announcement.

Bezos is also rumored to want to buy the NFL team Washington Commanders, possibly with help from music mogul Jay-Z.
