Following a two-day hiatus, the FIFA World Cup 2022 resumed on Friday with Croatia defeating Brazil in Al Rayyan, Qatar’s Education City Stadium in the first match of the tournament’s quarterfinals.
The first 90 minutes of the game ended in a scoreless draw thanks to multiple saves by Croatian goalie Dominik Livakovi who prevented Brazil from scoring. When Neymar scored in the opening period of extra time, Brazil finally made a breakthrough. Bruno Petkovic, though, scored in the final seconds of extra time to draw the game and force penalties.
In the quarterfinal game, Croatia did a remarkable job of neutralizing that excellent Brazil offensive squad in the first half. Neymar and Vinicius each had opportunities to put their clubs ahead, but their final results fell short.
The scoreboard showed 0-0 at the conclusion of the first half. Both teams were unable to break the tie, even in the second half, which resulted in extra time. Neymar’s genius gave Brazil a 1-0 lead just beyond the extra-halfway time’s point. In the final moments, Bruno Petkovic scored an equalizer to tie the score at one. Consequently, the game moved into a penalty shootout.
In the penalty shootout, Croatia appeared at ease. Livakovi stopped Rodrygo while Marquinhos’ penalty kick hit the post to advance Croatia to the semifinals after it scored in all four rounds.
On Friday, the Netherlands will play Argentina for the remaining semifinal position (11 a.m. ET). The semifinals, which start on Tuesday, December 13, will have the winners against each other.
