Ecuador secured the victory in the opening match of FIFA World Cup 2022 beating host Qatar with 2 goals on Sunday, thanks to two early goals by Enner Valencia.
Valencia scored a penalty kick goal in the 16th minute and a header goal in the 31st minute. In the third minute, he had a goal disallowed after an automated video review concluded that an Ecuadorian player was offside.
The evening was incredibly upsetting for Qatar, which was playing its opening World Cup game. Early on, the home team appeared disorganized and resorted to physical play in order to win possession of the ball. According to reports, supporters deserted in droves well before the final whistle.
Qatar became the first host nation in World Cup history to lose its opening match. Since 1998, 84 percent of the time, teams that win their opening World Cup encounter have gone to the elimination phase.
Qatar and Ecuador are two of the four teams with the lowest ranking in the 32-team field. In the world rankings, Ecuador (No. 44) and Qatar (No. 50) behind only Saudi Arabia (No. 51) and Ghana (No. 61), and neither is favored to advance out of their group.
This is the sole game scheduled for the tournament’s first day. The World Cup continues on Monday with three group-stage matches: England vs. Iran (8:00 a.m. Eastern, Fox Sports 1), Senegal vs. Netherlands (11:00 a.m. Eastern, Fox), and the United States vs. Wales (12:30 p.m. Eastern, Fox) (2 p.m. Eastern, Fox).
Qatar received an automatic bid as the host nation and was placed in Group A for their World Cup debut, as is customary for the host nation. Ecuador qualified for the World Cup for the fourth time and the first time since 2014 by placing fourth in South American qualifying. Only in 2016 has La Tri gone beyond the group stage.
