Cristiano Ronaldo will leave Manchester United by mutual agreement and immediately after his explosive interview with Piers Morgan.
Manchester United released a 67-word statement on Tuesday night saying that they had reached an agreement with the player to end his contract.
In an interview with TalkTV that aired in two parts on Wednesday and Thursday of last week, Cristiano Ronaldo, who is 37 years old, criticized the club and its manager, Erik ten Hag, whom he said he has “no respect” for.
Ronaldo also said that United’s higher-ups are trying to get him to leave Old Trafford, and he didn’t believe him when he said he couldn’t go to pre-season because his sick daughter was in the hospital.
United said they would decide how to respond to Ronaldo’s comments “after the full facts have been established.” They have now decided to part ways with the five-time Ballon d’Or winner.
A statement from a club said: “Cristiano Ronaldo has agreed to leave Manchester United, and he will do so right away.
“The club thanks him for all he did during his two stints at Old Trafford, where he scored 145 goals in 346 games, and they wish him and his family the best for the future.
“Everyone at Manchester United is still focused on keeping the team’s progress under Erik ten Hag going and working together to win on the field.”
Ronaldo came back to United for a second time last year, but the new manager, Erik ten Hag, didn’t like him as much this season.
The 37-year-old released a statement of his own, which said: “After talking with Manchester United, we’ve both agreed to get out of our contract early.
“I’ll always love Manchester United, and I’ll always love the fans. But I think it’s time for me to look for something new to do. I hope the team does well for the rest of the season and in the years to come,” it said.
