Instead, it was used to describe a financial crisis: the crash of the U.S. gold market on September 24, 1869. Jay Gould and Jim Fisk, two Wall Street financiers who were known for being very mean, worked together to buy up as much of the country’s gold as they could. They wanted to drive up the price so they could sell it for huge profits. On that September Friday, the conspiracy finally fell apart. The stock market went into a free fall, and everyone from Wall Street barons to farmers went bankrupt.
