Top 20 Honeymoon Destinations in the World

Honeymoon Destinations

Most newlyweds say that their honeymoon is the best trip they’ve ever taken. The first honeymoon trip after your wedding is spectacular. You may do bigger or crazier honeymoon trips later, perhaps with your growing family. It gives you time to spend together after all the planning and stress. It prepares you for future adventures and creates lifelong memories.

Great places near and far that meet your vision of romance, whether you like beaches, new foods, adventures, winter, or cities. We’ve made the ultimate list! Here are the 20 best destinations in the world to go on a honeymoon.

1. Amalfi Coast, Italy

There are many reasons why the Amalfi Coast is still at the top of the list for honeymooners. It’s hard to imagine a more classically romantic scene than Positano’s steep village streets, Moorish architecture, azure water, and colorful loungers and umbrellas lining the dark sand beaches. Glamour is easy to find, especially at the five-star Le Sirenuse, which has a tried-and-true formula for a sexy, sophisticated getaway.

2. Antigua & Barbuda

Antigua and Barbuda are a lot like Eden. They have brightly colored buildings, busy markets, tropical fruits, limestone formations, and, of course, lots of beautiful beaches. Between the two islands, you can be alone on a white sand beach or on a catamaran sailing at sunset between the Atlantic Ocean and the Caribbean Sea. Go to all-inclusive resorts like the luxurious and recently remodeled Curtain Bluff, where tennis, sailing, water-skiing, scuba diving, snorkeling, kayaking, and bocce are all included, as well as once-in-a-lifetime getaways like Jumby Bay Island, which is a private island.

3. Austin, Texas

You kind of look like a hipster, don’t you? Do you love music? Does the thought of barbecue make your mouth water? Get to the coolest city in the Lone Star State, which may not be known for romance but has places like Mount Bonnell and Lake Travis at sunset that are great for a date. If you don’t want to do that, you can stay at the trendy bungalow-style Hotel San Jose or the secluded luxury spa resort Travaasa Austin outside of the city and try food trucks, see shows, and window shop on South Congress.

4. Australia

Sydney and Melbourne have a similar argument to the one between Los Angeles and New York, but there are so many other parts of this great island nation as well. First, you can stay at the QT Bondi to get a golden tan or at the relatively new Old Clare Hotel for an adventure in the city. After visiting Melbourne’s great restaurants and laneways with murals, go to the artsy Jackalope Hotel on the Mornington Peninsula to feel like you’re in wine country. Western Australia has a lot to offer. For example, honeymooners can get a lot of their money in busy Perth. Rottnest Island is home to cute quokkas and Chris Hemsworth-approved glamping at Discovery Rottnest Island. The Kimberley and Ningaloo Reef is great for outback and ocean adventures. And it’s hard to find beaches that are more beautiful than those in the Whitsundays.

5. Baja California, Mexico

Baja California is the easiest honeymoon spot for people who live on the West Coast. The peninsula has some of the best parts of Mexico. In San Jose del Cabo, you’ll find all the signs of a real Mexican village, along with dozens of beautiful beaches for above- and below-water activities and luxurious resorts like the elegantly simple Las Ventanas al Paraiso, the brand-new Waldorf Astoria Los Cabos Pedregal or Viceroy Los Cabos, and The Cape, with its many rooftops. The Four Seasons Resort Los Cabos at Costa Palmas and Zadn, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve just opened on the less-visited East Cape, which has even more beautiful seascapes and a big “get away from it all” vibe. Just across the border in bougainvillea-covered Valle de Guadalupe, you can find some of the best wine and food you can imagine, as well as cool places to stay (like Cabaas Cuatro Cuartos and El Cielo Winery & Resort) that don’t cost much.

6. Bali, Indonesia

Bali is a magical place for a honeymoon. The only Hindu island in the huge country of Indonesia is a great place to feel passionate. Bali feels a bit more exotic than the tropical islands closer to the US. It has unspoiled beaches, surfing, snorkeling, massages, and a lot of cultures, art, music, rice terraces, and temples. Nature is honored here, and it’s easy to get into the spirit at incredibly lush places like Four Seasons Bali at Sayan and Mandapa, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve for jungle vibes, and Uluwatu Surf Villas or Mulia Villas for beach bliss.

7. Bhutan

If you and your partner like to do things that aren’t the norm, this South Asian gem is the way to go. India is a magical country that sits between China and India. It has its own culture and landscape, but anyone who has been to either of those places knows that they are both beautiful. The tiny kingdom in the Himalayas is a great place to go trekking, and it has kept a lot of its culture despite being far away and having a small amount of Western influence. As you move from one valley to the next, you can see Buddhist monasteries, jaw-dropping views, and forts.

8. The British Virgin Islands

Hurricane Irma is getting his comeuppance from a group of beautiful Caribbean islands that have come back to life. It’s a glorious rebirth. Valley Trunk, a super-luxurious resort on Virgin Gorda, started letting people back onto its beautiful beach in December 2019, showing off its updated interiors, cinema, gardens, and infinity-edge pool. Quito’s Inn, with its reggae music, is a new 21-room option in Cane Garden Bay on Tortola. On Anegada, a truly unspoiled island, beach bums can sleep in tents right on the sugary sand at Anegada Beach Club.

9. Buenos Aires, Argentina

If you spend your honeymoon in Argentina, be ready to dance the very sensual tango. People come from all over the world to dance at night in the capital city, which is known for its great nightlife. Most of the city has bike lanes, so you can get around easily on two wheels, or you can stay in a place like the Faena Hotel Buenos Aires or the Four Seasons Hotel Buenos Aires, which are both stylish and well-designed.

10. Cape Town, South Africa

Since the US dollar is stronger than the South African rand, your money goes a little further in this city at the southernmost point of Africa. Beautiful hotels and small guesthouses, like the design-forward The Silo and the resort-like One&Only Cape Town, offer great service and are great places to stay while exploring Cape Town’s beautiful mountains, coastline, and wildlife, like penguins and baboons. There is a lot of history to learn about, as well as great wine (try La Residence in Franschhoek) and exciting activities like cage diving with great white sharks.

11. Cartagena, Colombia

In the 1600s, Spain set up a colony in the area that is now Cartagena. Today, it is a popular vacation spot on the Caribbean coast of Colombia, with cobblestone streets, colorful buildings, and live music everywhere. There’s romance everywhere, especially when it’s salsa time at night. Stay in one of the best boutique hotels in the port city, like the luxurious Casa Lola or the beautifully restored Hotel Casa San Agustin, and make sure to visit the islands nearby. With the new ACAS Experience from Casa San Agustin, a couple can take a private boat charter to Isla Bar for lunch on a white-sand beach surrounded by turquoise water and palm trees.

12. Colorado

Colorado’s appeal is simple: it’s beautiful both in the winter when it’s covered in romantic snow, and in the summer when the snow has melted and left behind green, peaceful scenes. Active people can have a lot of fun, especially if they stay at the ski-in/ski-out Hotel Talisa in Vail, where the service is so good that they’ll bring the chapstick you forgot in your room to the top of the mountain for you. The stylish and social new ski-in/ski-out Gravity Haus is in Breckenridge. It has an onsen like those in Japan. The five-star Trappers Cabin on top of a mountain in Beaver Creek is a great place for honeymooners to hike, bike, and relax in a hot tub.

13. Copenhagen

Most of the words in Denmark’s capital may be hard to say, but that’s part of the fun. The beautiful Scandinavian country that is home to the Little Mermaid statue, grand castles, and a lot of very influential design is easy to get around and feels like home. Outside of the city, you can take day trips to hike in wooded Edens, and at night, you can do hygge with your one true love at a top hotel like the famous Hotel d’Angleterre, with lots of candles, wine, sweets, and a fire in the background.

14. Costa Rica

Nature lovers and people who like to try new things will love the Pacific side of Costa Rica. Santa Teresa is a small beach town where you can surf a lot to calm the mood. There are animals everywhere, the water is warm, and the waves are perfect. The rainforest above the beach has creative kitchens and boutique hotels like Florblanca Resort and Milarepa. Farther north, on Peninsula Papagayo, is the intimate, immersive boutique resort Kasiiya. It has elegant platform tents and a lot of ways to get into the wild and connect with each other and nature. The Retreat Costa Rica is a place to go for spa, healing, and organic gardens. It is on top of a quartz mountain with a view of the Pacific Ocean.

15. Croatia

Croatia is the place to go if you want to see magical crystalline terraced lakes and waterfalls, visit historical sites and ruins, sail around on a yacht, see cathedrals, or even have a wild party. The country that runs along the Mediterranean has some things in common with the Greek Isles, but it also has its own culture and looks. This real, unspoiled place is all about places with great views of the sea, like Villa Dubrovnik.

16. Cyclades, Greece

This group of islands in the Aegean Sea includes popular spots like Santorini, where the Grace Santorini hotel just finished a beautiful renovation, and Mykonos, where the new farm-to-table Nesaea restaurant is making people swoon. There are also important archaeological sites, beautiful sunset views, and islands like Paros and Folegrandos that are becoming more popular, where you can enjoy the beauty of your surroundings with fewer people. Even better, you can tour the whole area with Entre Cielos on a 104-foot-long luxury yacht. Luxury yacht brokers can help you find the ideal yacht for your journey if you’re searching for your own boat to explore this side of Greece.

17. Dominica

Dominica is a great place for water babies because it has rivers and streams, waterfalls, hot sulfur strings, and a boiling lake. It also has the Caribbean Sea. You can also hike on the region’s longest trail. After Hurricane Maria destroyed the island, eco-resorts are becoming very popular. The island is now a great place to go canyoning in Titou Gorge, relax in the mud pools at Wotten Waven Hot Springs, watch whales, and stay in beautiful new hotels like Jungle Bay, Secret Bay, and Cabrits Resort & Spa Kempinski.

18. Fiji

Is there a more classic honeymoon on a tropical island than Fiji? It’s hard to think of a better vacation than hopping between five-star resorts on the more than 300 islands in the South Pacific, which are full of white sand, palm trees, mountains, and blue lagoons. Visit Laucala, a private island with tropical rainforests, volcanoes, deserted beaches, sustainable locally grown food, and activities like diving, golf, horseback riding, and game fishing, for a taste of heaven on earth. Kokomo Private Island Resort and Nanuku, Auberge Resorts Collection are two more places that look like they belong on a postcard.

19. Galapagos

There’s nothing wrong with a simple beach resort honeymoon, but if you’re looking for something more, a Galapagos trip might be the most epic thing you can do. Charles Darwin’s favorite place to go is the best place for nature lovers to soak up an exotic dose of nature. There are many ways to see the islands off the coast of Ecuador. One is to take a cruise, preferably on a small ship or mega yachts like Ecoventura’s brand-new luxury-meets-eco-friendly Theory, which sails for a week around the northern or southern islands with snorkeling, standup paddleboard, and kayaking gear, and naturalists. There’s also the luxury Pikaia Lodge, which has a sustainable food program, the coffee they grow themselves, an infinity pool, spa, and hotel rooms that don’t use any carbon.

20. Grenada

Hurricanes destroyed a lot of the Caribbean, but they didn’t touch Spice Island, a small paradise that few people know about. The timing was good because there are a lot of high-end resorts in the works. Last year, Grand Anse Beach got its first big resort in decades. The Silversands Hotel has the longest pool in the Caribbean, but don’t plan to spend all your time there. The island has stunning beaches, diverse cultures and foods, and lush jungles.
