With the new generation of telecommunications networks coming online, there are some guarantees that need to be made. The European Commission came to this conclusion, and from this agreement came a set of tools about the issue. In Spain, this has led to a draft of the 5G cybersecurity law that is still in its early stages.

The goal of putting the European tool box into the legal systems of the Member States is to reduce the security risks that could come from setting up and running 5G networks. It’s a set of strategic, technical, and support steps that will help get more guarantees in this area. The rules are made because the new network could have huge effects on the economy of the countries in industry and in companies and on the daily lives of the people who live there.

The document from the European Commission lists possible threats that could come from 5G and where they could come from. At the same time, it shows where the most sensitive parts are and where problems could happen. In response to all of this, plans are being made to reduce the risks so that they can be used across Europe. But before that can happen, it has to be done within the rules of the Member States.

Who is affected by the 5G cybersecurity bill?

As it is written now, the draft 5G cybersecurity law sets up measures that are aimed at network operators. These measures are pointed out in the document. But there are also rules for people who sell and make network equipment, as well as for some corporate users. These are the people or companies who use 5G services that aren’t available to the general public.

The standard also sets rules for how things should be done in the public sphere. This is done to make sure that networks are set up in a safe way. But it’s up to the operators to do most of the work. Your first duty is to analyze and handle risks in the right way. And this is done by looking at how much it might depend on the supply chain. Diversifying suppliers is important for operators so that they don’t have to rely on a single one for most of their equipment.

Operators must put restrictions on qualified high-risk suppliers in this diversification plan. The document has a list of things to think about when setting up 5G networks. It’s about making sure that the service provider companies follow the security standards set out in the regulations.

The role of the central government

In the future, regulations will give the central government an active role in putting 5G in place. You have to come up with a 5G security plan, which will be an analysis of the risks that could come from using the technology on a national scale. This document will have the reports from the operators, who are required to share information. In the same way, those who sell and make equipment will have to give the government information for this report.

With all the data collection and analysis that goes on, the 5G cybersecurity law says that the government can ban the use of equipment or services from certain suppliers if it thinks they pose a risk. You can also set limits on how much a product or service is used, and you can even make sure that only certified systems are used on the national network.

A boost to R&D

In terms of R&D, the standard gives both networks and services ways to help out. The 5G cybersecurity law is also meant to help with interoperability and standardization. The idea is that putting all of these technologies together will make it easier for new ideas to come up. The standard also sets up rules for how 5G network access devices can be sold.

The law thinks about the possibility of putting requirements on how the government buys 5G networks and services. In the legal text, it is stressed how important it is for systems to work together. This will help the new technology live up to its full potential.

It’s important to remember that the fifth generation of networks is seen as a turnoff in many places. Industry and logistics are two areas where 5G could make operations much more efficient. So, the law has a section about the need to promote research and development in networks, which is a way to do this in some economic sectors.
