World Hypertension Day 2022: Know History, Theme and Significance of this Day

The 17 May is World Hypertension Day. It is a day to raise awareness about hypertension and its symptoms. Hypertension, commonly known as high blood pressure, occurs when the blood pressure exceeds 140/90, which is not healthy. When the reading exceeds 180/120, the patient is deemed to be in danger.

Over a billion individuals worldwide have high blood pressure, which is a primary cause of heart disease and premature mortality. Hypertension was once assumed to be a disease that predominantly affected the elderly. However, it is currently fairly frequent among teenagers.

Young adults frequently have high blood pressure because they are overweight, have poor eating habits, and do not exercise regularly. Long-term high blood pressure increases a person’s risk of developing chronic kidney disease, stroke, heart failure, and other health issues.

History of World Hypertension Day 

On May 14, 2005, the World Hypertension League, comprised of 85 national hypertension societies, observed the first World Hypertension Day. The purpose was to raise awareness about the illness. The following year, on May 17, the day was celebrated, and it has been done every year since. The World Hypertension League’s mission is to increase awareness about high blood pressure, what causes it, and how to prevent it. This is due to the fact that high blood pressure affects over a billion people.

World Hypertension Day 2022 will focus on ‘Measure Your Blood Pressure Accurately, Control it, Live Longer. The topic attempts to combat low awareness rates around the world by providing precise techniques to measure blood pressure, particularly in low- and middle-income communities.

Significance of World Hypertension Day 

The major purpose of the day is to raise awareness about the need of detecting high blood pressure early and treating it promptly to avoid difficulties later on. If you have high blood pressure, you are more susceptible to developing heart problems such as coronary heart disease and stroke. It can also lead to heart failure, dementia, and chronic kidney disease.

Let’s understand Hypertension

A healthy person’s blood pressure should be 120 over 80. If it’s 140/90 or higher, it could mean that the person has high blood pressure. High blood pressure can cause the heart to feel pressure, which isn’t good for your health. It can be caused by being overweight, living an unhealthy lifestyle, or having certain genes.

Hypertension slowly leads to a number of other health problems. For instance, someone with high blood pressure could have a heart attack or a stroke. There is also a chance of harm to the kidneys and other organs.

On World Hypertension Day, people are told about these risks. Expert seminars are held on this day. Also, in health care facilities, people talk in groups about Hypertension and other related issues, and they are given advice on how to get rid of it.
