Why should We Take Care of Cognitive Reserve?
Cognitive reserve is a concept that was created in the eighties as a result of some studies where it was identified. In the presence of some brain disorders such as Alzheimer’s, there were areas of the brain that stored information that was not forgotten or transformed with time.
In fact, the discovery of cognitive reserve arose from a highly revealing series of analyzes. There were people whose brains showed signs of having advanced Alzheimer’s, but for some reason, these people had never had Alzheimer’s. symptoms of the disease, which, as you probably already know, are very notorious because they are based on the fact that people who suffer from mental disorders like this one tend to suffer from cognitive degeneration in which they can even forget who they are and that, although it can be avoided with some habit changes such as sleeping well, it is a degenerative disorder that cannot be cured.
It is linked to the ability of our brain
It works as a kind of property of the mind in which it protects itself against injuries as a result of the experiences that it identifies and that help it in this regard. It is also linked to the ability of our brain to improvise and find alternative ways of doing a job, due to the ability to adapt and plasticity that the mind has and that we have seen, for example, in the way we have adapted to work since home or virtual life as a result of the pandemic for a few years. Similarly, our brain knows how to adapt when it sees a deficiency or complication as a result of an injury, and this is part of thecognitive reserve.
This is accumulated through our daily activities and the experience we obtain from them, and it has more to do with the cognitive activity that has been developed since birth and that can protect us when we need to adapt to an injury or cognitive change.
What do the other researches show?
Other research has shown that people with higher cognitive reserve can more effectively avoid symptoms of degenerative brain changes associated with other disorders such as dementia or other brain diseases, such as Parkinson’s, multiple sclerosis or stroke.
Given this information, it is essential to think of ways to protect our cognitive reserve and one of them is to keep in constant learning. A study in the scientific journal The Lancet proposed that people who continue to learn and train throughout their lives are more likely to develop additional cognitive reserves and, therefore, protect their brain more from injury.
