Why should We Take Care of Cognitive Reserve?

Cognitive reserve is a concept that was created in the eighties as a result of some studies where it was identified. In the presence of some brain disorders such as Alzheimer’s, there were areas of the brain that stored information that was not forgotten or transformed with time. 

In fact, the discovery of cognitive reserve arose from a highly revealing series of analyzes. This is accumulated through our daily activities and the experience we obtain from them, and it has more to do with the cognitive activity that has been developed since birth and that can protect us when we need to adapt to an injury or cognitive change.

Other research has shown that people with higher cognitive reserve can more effectively avoid symptoms of degenerative brain changes associated with other disorders such as dementia or other brain diseases, such as Parkinson’s, multiple sclerosis or stroke.

Given this information, it is essential to think of ways to protect our cognitive reserve and one of them is to keep in constant learning. A study in the scientific journal The Lancet proposed that people who continue to learn and train throughout their lives are more likely to develop additional cognitive reserves and, therefore, protect their brain more from injury.
