Noah Wins Men’s 200m Gold at World Athletics Championships 2022

Noah Lyles ran a great race to keep his 200m world title at World Athletics Championships 2022 on Thursday. This was the second time that US sprinters swept the podium at the World Championships in Oregon.

Five days after Fred Kerley led the U.S. to a 1-2-3 finish in the 100m, Lyles put on another show-stopping performance at Hayward Field. He won the race in 19.31 seconds, which is the fourth fastest time ever. Only Usain Bolt and Yohan Blake, both from Jamaica, have run faster.

The charismatic American star, who was supposed to be one of the favorites but didn’t do well at the Olympics last year, won gold ahead of Kenny Bednarek in 19.77 seconds. Erriyon Knighton, a teenager, came in third in 19.80 seconds.

After Lyles crossed the finish line, he let out a roar of joy and tore open his vest in happiness. The 25-year-old from Florida had every reason to celebrate after breaking Michael Johnson’s long-standing record of 19.32 seconds and becoming the fastest American runner (200m) in history.

“Today is my day, and I got to do something I’ve been wanting to do for years. My whole family is here, “Lyles said afterwards. “I thought it would take a long time, so I was hoping it would go quickly.”

From the moment Lyles came out of the blocks smoothly and hit top speed within 50 meters to give himself a comfortable lead coming out of the bend, the outcome was never in doubt.

Bednarek and Knighton tried to keep up with Lyles, but they couldn’t. Lyles seemed to find an extra gear that helped him pull away at World Athletics Championships 2022, and he eventually took the tape several meters ahead of Bednarek.
