What does a Data Scientist Do?

Data Scientist

Before we proceed, let’s first try to understand what a Data Scientist is and what it means to be a Data Scientist. To be precise, Data scientists extract and analyze data to enhance or align with the business’s overall objectives. Data Scientists mainly work in machine learning, big data, or artificial intelligence corporations— these companies are not necessary or required as long as you need to become a data scientist.

Now that we’ve discussed what a data scientist is, the next one is what does a data scientist do?

A Data Scientist is an expert who extensively specializes in Big Data to develop beneficial business insights. The day-to-day activities of a Data Scientist can sometimes be predictable, and on some days, the role of a Data Scientist can be quite crucial. A Data Scientist has to reckon many roles such as a skilled mathematician, an analyst, a computer scientist, and the list goes on. One can become a Data scientist by enrolling in data science courses and certifications

Responsibilities of a data scientist

Data scientists need to work closely with business stakeholders to understand and have a clear perspective on their goals and determine how data can acquire them. They design the data modeling processes, generate algorithms and predictive models to extract the business’s data needs, and assist in analyzing the data and share insights with associates. While every project is different, the procedure for collecting and analyzing data generally follows the same pattern.

  • Ask the right questions
  • Attainment of data
  • Process and cleaning the data
  • Integrate and storing of data
  • Initial data analysis and exploratory data analysis
  • Select any or more potential models and algorithms
  • Acquire data science techniques, such as machine learning, statistical modeling, and artificial intelligence
  • Measure and improvement in the results
  • Submit final result to business stakeholders
  • Adapt to changes based on feedback
  • Repeat the process to solve an arising problem

What are the roles of a Data Scientist?

Data scientist roles are emphasized on a certain part of the data processing cycle, from analyzing data to assembling the underlying data warehousing infrastructure. There are five common data scientist job roles. They are:

Data scientists. Data scientists work closely with business stakeholders to understand and have a clear perspective on their goals and determine how data can acquire them. They design the data modeling processes, generate algorithms and predictive models to extract the business’s data needs, and assist in analyzing the data and share insights with associates.

Data analyst. Data analysts utilize business intelligence and analytics tools to examine the data and identify trends. Their work is directed towards creating prescriptive insights. By analyzing historical patterns, they can make data-driven suggestions to optimize prospective business outcomes.

Data engineer. Data engineers are accountable for establishing and maintaining the analytics infrastructure that facilitates almost every other data function, including architecture like databases, servers, and large-scale processing systems.

Business intelligence specialist. Business intelligence (BI) specialists take on the role of designing and implementation of  BI software and systems while incorporating them with databases and data warehouses. Business Intelligence provides a readout on the current status of the business by tracking key operations metrics in real-time, giving the business descriptive, instead of predictive, data.

Data architect. Data architects team up with data engineers to conceptualize, visualize, and construct business database management systems (DBMS). DBMS refers to the technology solutions used to oversee the storage and recovery of data from databases.
