How to Block Subreddits [Latest Tech Tips 2023]
Listen to the Podcast:
Most people around the world use Reddit regularly. Sometimes they ask how to block subreddits. Maximum time they don’t find out anyway about this issue. As a result, Editorialge Social Media Team mainly focuses on it in this article.
Reddit, the “front page of the internet,” is one of the most visited sites. Like all user-generated content sites, it has its share of inappropriate content. So what do you do when an objectionable post is approved and appears on the r/all list?
It used to be easy how to block subreddits you didn’t like. Today, Reddit users have to dig deep to claim sovereignty over their r/all feed.
The Way Things Used to Be…
When Reddit wasn’t completely redesigned, it was relatively easy for users to filter their feeds. Blocking specific subreddits was easy, as this option was easily accessible on the r/all page. To remove an annoying subreddit from your feed, all you had to do was type its name in the search box labeled “Filter Subreddit,” click the + – icon, and you were done.
In 2018, however, Reddit unveiled a redesigned website after more than 12 months of development and testing. This is the site’s first major visual redesign in over a decade. The new design comes with sleeker graphics and a few other changes. On the r/all page, the subreddit filter search bar has disappeared.
Reddit today
From this point on, Reddit will default to the new view. However, nostalgic users can revert to the old view, which has been moved to https://old.reddit.com. All recent posts will be published there first. If you create an account on the new site, you can use it on the old one.
The old page remains as before the redesign, including a search box for subreddits by filter on the r/all page. You can try it and type the name of the subreddit you want to exclude from your feed. It will disappear from your old Reddit feed. However, the subreddit you blocked on the old site will not be blocked on the new one.
So it may seem that users of the new Reddit page are defenseless against the subreddits they don’t want to see in their feeds. However, that’s not entirely true. Let’s see how you can ban unwanted communities from your r/all feed.
How to Block Subreddits Nowadays?
How to block subreddits is the main topic of this content. Here we have described every method so that you can block subreddits as you want. With the disappearance of the subreddit filter search box in the feed, the average user can do little to weed out unwanted content that the community has voted on. This applies to both the desktop version of the site and the native mobile apps. This video from Tech Junkie explains in detail information on blocking Subreddits.
But for those who don’t want to use third-party apps and extensions, all is not lost: you can upgrade to Reddit Premium. With the Premium version of the site or app, you can block specific subreddits from the r/all feed depending on your platform.
To access Premium, click on the small triangle next to your avatar (in the upper right corner of your browser window) and click the User Settings option. Next, go to the Reddit Premium tab and click the Get Premium link. Click the Get Reddit Premium button on the next page and choose your payment method. Follow the rest of the instructions.
When you’re done updating, go to the r/all page and hit the block with a hammer. The process is essentially the same as the old version of Reddit.
Native Mobile Apps
When it comes to blocking specific subreddits, mobile users are just as unlucky as desktop or laptop users. Neither the Android nor the iOS version of the Reddit app has the jackhammer option. They can upgrade to Reddit Premium and use their computer’s browser to remove unwanted subreddits.
To update from your cell phone, download and install the Reddit app. Launch the app from your device’s home screen. Tap your avatar (in the top left corner on Android) and tap the Reddit Premium tab. Tap the Get Premium button and follow the instructions.
With a premium subscription, you can block subreddits and buy Reddit Gold, the site’s currency that allows you to interact with other users and their content. Finally, Reddit will stop showing you ads. The monthly fee is $5.99, and once purchased, Reddit Premium is available on any device you use.
Third-party decisions
If you want to get your r/all channel back but don’t want to pay your hard-earned money to Reddit, you can use one of the many browser extensions. Our favorite is the Reddit Enhancement Suite. This application is available for Chrome, Microsoft Edge, Mozilla Firefox, Opera, and Safari. RES is well explained in the video of The School of Digital Marketing.
For this article, we have used the Google Chrome version. The best thing about this extension is that there are many tips and tutorials on Reddit on how to use it. Download the extension and install it. Now let’s see how to hide the problematic subreddit from your r/all feed.
- Open your browser. Go to https://www.reddit.com.
2. Click on the RES extension key. A drop-down menu will appear (if you are in Chrome, click the button that looks like a puzzle piece, then click the three-dot icon next to the RES extension).
3. Click on Settings. Depending on the version, you may see a gear icon. Click on it.
4. This will open the Reddit page for the enhancement set. Click the filter edit tab in the left menu under the Subreddits category.
5. Activate the filtered it option.
6. Scroll to the bottom of the page and configure the settings of your blocked subreddit.
7. Activate the +Add filter button in the lower-left corner of the field labeled Subreddits.
8. Enter a subreddit you don’t want to see anymore.
If you want to block other sub-resources, repeat steps 8 and 9. When finished, scroll to the top of the page and click Save Settings.
Defend your right to privacy.
Reddit has decided to reclaim the r/all feed with a new layout and design. However, users who do not want to accept all feeds can still claim independence from Reddit’s algorithm. Available options include paying for premium subscriptions and installing third-party apps.
