Pfizer Vaccine Highly Effective against COVID-19 Hospitalisations: Lancet
According to research published in The Lancet journal on Tuesday (October 5, 2021), two doses of the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine are 90 percent effective against hospitalization from the disease for at least six months for all variations, including Delta.
The researchers discovered that the vaccine’s effectiveness against allS-COV-2 infections decreased with time, falling from 88% within one month after getting two vaccine doses to 47% after six months.
They did say, however, that the overall effectiveness of the Pfizer (BNT162b2) vaccine against hospitalizations remained at 90% for all variations.
According to the researchers, the study highlights the necessity of increasing COVID-19 immunization rates worldwide and monitoring vaccine effectiveness to determine which people should be given booster shots first.
“Our study confirms that vaccines are a critical tool for controlling the pandemic and that they remain highly effective in preventing severe disease and hospitalization, including from the Delta and other variants of concern,” said Sara Tart of Kaiser Permanente in the United States, the study’s lead author.
“In the months following a second treatment, protection against infection decreases,” Sara Tartof stated.
People in many nations throughout the world have not yet had a primary vaccination series, according to the researchers, therefore considerations for booster doses should take global COVID-19 vaccine availability into account.
Between December 4, 2020, and August 8, 2021, the research team analyzed 3,436,957 electronic health data from the Kaiser Permanente Southern California (KPSC) health system to determine vaccine effectiveness against S-CoV-2 infections and COVID-19-related hospitalization.
5.4 percent of participants were infected with S-CoV-2 during the study period. 6.6 percent of those sick were admitted to the hospital.
It had been three to four months since they had been properly immunized.
The study indicated that one month after two Pfizer doses, vaccination effectiveness against Delta variant infections was 93%, but declined to 53% after four months.
The effectiveness against other variations was 97 percent after one month after receiving two doses, but it dropped to 67 percent after four months, according to the study.
They claimed that effectiveness against Delta-related hospitalizations remained high (93%) throughout the research period.
There was no difference in fading across the CoV-2 variant kinds, according to the researchers.
They did add, however, that because Delta became the dominant strain in the midst of the study period, longer follow-up analyses are needed to determine the rate of waning for the variance in comparison to other strains.
Pfizer Vaccines Senior Vice President and Chief Medical Officer Luis Jodar commented, “Our variant-specific analysis clearly reveals that the BNT162b2 vaccine is efficacious against all current variations of concern, including Delta.”
“The majority of COVID-19 infections in persons who have received two vaccination doses are caused by fading, not by delta variant or other variations escaping vaccine protection,” Luis Jodar explained.
The authors note that their study has certain limitations.
Because vaccination status among the study population was not randomized, the researchers were unable to demonstrate causal correlations between vaccination and COVID-19 outcomes.
They also lacked information on the research population’s adherence to mask recommendations, social interactions, occupation, and disease rates, all of which could influence the risk of developing S-CoV-2 infection and being tested for it.
