Things to Know about Commonwealth Games 2022 [with Schedule]

Commonwealth games 2022

Commonwealth Games, also called the “Friendly Games”, are an international multi-sport event with athletes from countries in the Commonwealth. The prestigious sports event is getting ready for the Commonwealth Games 2022, which will start with a big ceremony on July 28, 2022, in Birmingham. India won a total of 503 medals at the Commonwealth Games. This includes 181 gold medals, 173 silver medals, and 149 bronze medals. Notably, India won 231 of the 503 medals at the last three Commonwealth Games. This shows how quickly sports are becoming more important in India.

As the Games get closer, learn more about their history and look at the full list of Indians who have won medals at the prestigious games.

What are the Commonwealth Games?

The Commonwealth Games are a multi-sport event that happen every four years, usually between the Olympics. This time, athletes from 72 countries and territories, many of which were once British colonies, are taking part. In 1930, the first event, called the British Empire Games, took place in Hamilton, Canada.

Like the Olympics, some sports can come and go from the Commonwealth Games. The list of sports, which is decided by the host city with the approval of the governing body, is always changing. However, “core sports” like athletics and swimming are always included.

After being added along with beach volleyball and para table tennis, this is the first time that women’s cricket will be a part of the Commonwealth Games.

Where will the Games take place?

When Durban, South Africa, was given the right to host the Games in September 2015, it was the first time the Olympics were going to be held in Africa. But the Commonwealth Games Federation removed those rights in March 2017 after it emerged that financial constraints brought on by South Africa’s flagging economy would prevent the city from fulfilling some of the promises made when it bid for the event. In December 2017, it was said that Birmingham would host the Games instead of Durban. The opening ceremony will be held on July 27 and the Games close on August 8.

Cricket’s first time ever

For the first time in the history of the Commonwealth Games, women’s cricket will be the main event. This is because cricket is a popular sport in many of the countries that are taking part. The last time cricket was on the Commonwealth Games schedule was in Kuala Lumpur in 1998, but now it will be the turn of the women. It will also be the first time that the Twenty20 format is used at the Games. Australia, Barbados, India, New Zealand, Pakistan, South Africa, and Sri Lanka will all be there to watch it on the famous grounds of Edgbaston.

What are the 2022 events?

What new sports are part of the Olympics this year?

T20 baseball (women)

It will be the first time that T20 cricket is part of the Commonwealth Games, and it will also be the first time that women’s cricket is on the sports schedule. Men’s 50 overs cricket was part of the Kuala Lumpur Games in 1998.

Judo

Judo has been an optional sport at the Commonwealth Games for the past three years, so this will be the first time that it is a core sport.

3×3 basketball

This is the first time that Basketball 3×3 has ever been at the Commonwealth Games.

The more common 5×5 version of the game has been played at the Olympics twice, once in Melbourne in 2006 and again on the Gold Coast in 2018.

3×3 basketball for wheelchairs

At the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games, 3×3 wheelchair basketball will be shown to the world for the first time.

There will be 12 teams: six men’s teams from England, South Africa, Northern Ireland, Australia, Canada, and Malaysia, and six women’s teams from England, South Africa, Scotland, Australia, Canada, and Kenya.

Para table tennis

Para Table Tennis has a proud history as one of the founding sports of the Paralympic Games. It was one of eight sports at the first Paralympic Games, which took place in Rome in 1960, and its long history with the Games will continue to grow at the Tokyo 2020 and Paris 2024 games.

Now that the sport will be part of the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games, it will be one of the world’s most prestigious events, which will make it even more popular in key growth markets.
