Starlink RV Perfect for People Who Used to Travel

Starlink RV, Elon Musk’s Internet, is now available in a large part of the world. In fact, people from Latin America have already ordered their antenna and subscription to get what has been called the fastest Internet in the world. Now, the company has announced a new product called Starlink RV, which is perfect for people who are always on the go but don’t want to lose their connection.

What is Starlink RV?

Starlink RV is the name of a new Starlink system that lets you take the new rectangular Starlink receiver anywhere on the same continent where Starlink works.

This can be perfect for people who don’t work in one place and have to travel, either on the road or to different countries. It can also be great for campers, people who live in their cars, or even people who go to a vacation home for a few months every year. So, for example, a user couldn’t connect to Starlink before because they were too far from their receiving antenna. Now, they can connect anywhere by using the new rectangle as an antenna.

Starlink RV lets us stay connected even when we are in very remote areas. That is, you won’t lose any of your connection if you also want to go to a hidden house in the forest. Plus, the system doesn’t use up as much battery power as I thought it would.

On the other hand, if you will only use the RV for a season and don’t want it for permanent use, you can stop your subscription at any time and only pay for the months you need it. This is another benefit of this system.

According to Starlink RV review, natural obstacles and storms can slow down system performance, such as internet speed. Even though it’s called an RV, you can’t use it in a moving car. To use it, you’d have to hook up your antenna and get to your destination.

Also, the price is high, which is not a big surprise since the regular Starlink system is not cheap at all.

For now, the system is only available in the U.S., but it is expected to spread to the rest of North America and Europe in the coming months and become more flexible so that Starlink RV can be used anywhere in the world.

Starlink RV vs Cellular

RV-grade signal boosters from companies like Weboost start at about $450 and would have likely made some of my tests with cellular data faster. With a booster, you can sometimes double or even quadruple your speed, but even then, it wouldn’t be as fast as the Starlink RV. And you can’t strengthen a signal that isn’t there.

For comparison, Zoom video conferencing needs at least 6Mbps down and at least 2Mbps up, while livestreaming needs at least 6Mbps up. But speed isn’t all that matters. Video conferencing and streaming can’t work if there are a lot of dropouts, and gamers can lose an online campaign if the latency is more than 60ms.

In terms of latency, the Starlink app reported a range of 28–88ms, with a mean of 50ms. The more detailed Speedtest app also showed a latency of around 50ms when there was no other traffic, with a range of 32–69ms. It also said that upload latency (ping lag measured during uploads) was between 71 and 169ms and download latency was between 161 and 293ms. Starlink still needs to do some work to reach its goal of 20–40ms latency.

It only takes a few minutes to set up the Starlink RV hardware. One usually has to put the dish on the ground or on top of my camper and ran its 23-meter (75-foot) cable back to the Wi-Fi router, where it connects with a difficult Micro USB connector that rarely lines up right. Then, you plug the router into your camper’s AC port, shore power, or a big portable battery with a built-in inverter and watch Dishy spin up and turn to lock onto an overhead satellite. This gives a person time to enjoy the space-age tech while he or she has been struggling with slow or nonexistent mobile networks.

When a person works in an open field or at the beach, for example, Starlink’s perfect line-of-sight connectivity worked for hours without any network drops. This meant he/she could attend video conferences, make calls over Wi-Fi, watch TikTok videos, and stream Netflix and YouTube videos without any problems.
