Instagram to Deactivate Swipe-up Feature on August 30
Since June, the swipe-up feature has been in beta testing, and it may soon allow any Instagram user to share a link on the network.
Instagram, which is owned by Facebook, has chosen to eliminate the swipe-up feature that allows creators and companies to lead users to third-party websites. It has already sent out app alerts warning users that the service will be unavailable starting August 30.
However, this does not imply that the social networking platform prevents users from visiting other websites. Instead of swipe-up links, Instagram will replace them with link stickers that users may tap to navigate to the website. Although stickers are widely used in Instagram stories and posts, they cannot be linked to a website.
Instagram said that the stickers are more apt with the way people use Instagram against the swipe-up feature. Users can now swipe left and right to move through stories, while advertisers and select users can utilize the swipe up function to sell things, provide additional details on an offer, and so on.
Since June, this function has been in beta testing, and it may soon allow any Instagram user to share a link on the network. This is a significant change because the swipe-up function was previously only available to influencers with more than 10,000 followers and advertisers who paid for visibility on Instagram.
According to an Instagram spokesman, the social media site is “currently assessing” whether to make the function available to all users or only the top influencers and brands.
