Doctor Strange 2 Box Office Crosses $800 Million Milestone

Doctor Strange 2 has earned $803 million at the global box office since its May 6 release, making it the second-highest-grossing Hollywood film of the pandemic era. As we all know, the top spot is held by Tom Holland’s superhero film Spider-Man: No Way Home, which grossed $1.89 billion during its theatrical run. Nonetheless, the Doctor Strange sequel has outperformed films such as the action thriller F9: The Fast Saga ($726 million), the James Bond thriller No Time To Die ($774.2 million), and the DC film The Batman ($768.5 million).

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness has earned $342.1 million in the United States and Canada, out of a total of $803 million. The remaining $461.1 million came from nearly 49 other markets, the largest of which were South Korea ($45.9 million), the United Kingdom ($43.8 million), Mexico ($35.7 million), and Brazil ($29.2 million). Needless to say, the film has not yet been released in China or Russia.

The Doctor Strange 2 film has earned nearly Rs.122 crore in India, outperforming Ranveer Singh’s Hindi-language comedy-drama Jayeshbhai Jordaar. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness may have benefited from being released nearly a month and a half after SS Rajamouli’s Telugu-language period action drama RRR, and nearly three weeks after the Kannada-language actioner K.G.F: Chapter 2.

Doctor Strange sequel — Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness — remained the worldwide number one film from May 20 to May 22, grossing nearly $32 million in its third weekend alone. It faced little competition from the historical drama Downton Abbey: A New Era, which earned $16 million to finish second on the box office charts in the United States. This is not surprising given that the title, which is a sequel to the 2019 feature film adaptation of the period TV show Downton Abbey, is primarily aimed at older adults.

Doctor Strange 2 movie is not the only one to make headlines this week; the action-packed adventure film Uncharted, which also stars Holland, has crossed the $400 million mark worldwide, while the animated adventure film Sonic the Hedgehog 2 has crossed the $375 million mark. While Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness still has enough gas in the tank to do well in the coming weeks, it will face competition from Tom Cruise’s action film Top Gun: Maverick, which hits theaters worldwide on May 27.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, directed by Sam Raimi, delves into the concept of a multiverse, which was introduced to the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the Tom Hiddleston-led series Loki and expanded on in Spider-Man: No Way Home. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness stars Benedict Cumberbatch and Elizabeth Olsen, and the cast also includes Chiwetel Ejiofor, Xochitl Gomez, and Benedict Wong. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is currently in theaters around the world.
