The wrath of God: Top 4 Reasons to See the Thriller
The Wrath of God is a new Argentine film available on Netflix, and critics have described it as dark, cryptic, and twisted.
The Wrath of God is a crime thriller (with a lot of psychology) directed by Sebastián Schindel (director of series like Crmenes en Familia and El Patrón: Radiografa de un Crimen) that honours the tradition of Argentine cinema with its raw touch.
In the midst of a spate of mysterious fatalities, we follow a narrative of vengeance in which he strives to take justice into his own hands.
The film is one of the numerous Latin films available on Netflix, demonstrating that wonderful things can come from this side of the globe, this time with a narrative adapted from a well-known novel about a writer and a lady who suffers a horrible tragedy.
And the title The Wrath of God has nothing to do with biblical stories, but rather with the concept of divine justice and the idea that everything in life has a cost and an outcome.
Why watch The Wrath of God?
The cast
The film features excellent performers who do an excellent job of bringing each of their characters to life, revealing their inner demons and contradictions.
Diego Peretti (from The Simulators and the Robbery of the Century) plays a writer named Kloster, and Macarena Achaga (from the Netflix series based on the life of Luis Miguel) plays Juliana B, the protagonist, alongside Juan Minujn (from Focus and Los dos Papas) as a journalist named Esteban Rey, and Mónica Antonópulos, who previously appeared in the series To Catch a Thief).
They’re all caught up in a tale of murder, vengeance, and madness that pushes them to their limits.
A Disturbing Story
The Wrath of God follows Luciana, a lady who has lost numerous members of her family in odd and bizarre circumstances, and she gradually suspects that the person responsible for everything is a writer for whom she worked, who is rapidly losing his mind.
Luciana seeks justice and answers from a journalist, who is tasked with investigating the case in order to uncover the links and identify the perpetrator. Kloster, in Luciana’s view, is a writer who suffers from a mental condition known as a mystical delusion (the title of the film is a reference to this) and feels that he has a purpose in life.
While answers are sought, more and more fatalities occur, each one more bloody than the last, making the hunt for the perpetrator all the more urgent.
Argentine Cinema is Top
The argentine film has repeatedly demonstrated that thrillers and themes of mystery and violence work best for it. We have films like Thesis and The Secret in Their Eyes that succeed partly due to their plots, which blend reality, mystery, and human psychology in one location.
In addition to having amazing acting and excellent photography, The Wrath of God is based on a well-known book by Guillermo Martnez (author of The Oxford Murders, which was adapted into a film by Lex de la Iglesia).
Is It Based on a Real Case?
“Ten years later, Luciana has nothing left of the joyful girl to whom the great writer Kloster dictated his novels,” according to the summary of the film. Luciana lives in fear after the murders of her loved ones, fearing that they are part of a calculated vengeance scheme against her, a circle around her that will only be closed with the number seven.”
However, this does not rule out the presence of genuine materials. Mystical (or messianic) delusion is a medical condition in which patients feel they can speak directly with God. Furthermore, according to El Pas, the author’s story “raises the issue between justice as societal restitution and the need for personal retribution, as well as chance and coincidence as an explanation of the facts, as well as certain artistic debates.”
It is not a factual narrative in the traditional sense, but it is inspired by human tragedies and how they may cause us to respond in unexpected ways.
