Oppo Reno 8 5G Review: Features, Specifications and Price

This Oppo Reno 8 5G review will tell you why you should or should not buy the new smartphone. With the release of the Reno 8 5G and the Reno 8 Pro 5G, Oppo has expanded the Reno brand. Oppo is marketing these two smartphones as “The Portrait Expert”. The Reno 8 Pro 5G that we previously evaluated impressed us with its design and build quality, but it fell short of the competition in terms of performance. Will the Oppo Reno 8 5G provide a comparable experience or does it have a competitive advantage? Let’s find out reading the Oppo Reno 8 5G review.

Oppo Reno 8 5G Review and Full Specifications

Design

The Oppo Reno 8 5G has a fashionable style, and the Shimmer Gold model I have has no trouble attracting attention. Oppo flattened the sides of the Reno 8 5G to conform to modern design trends. This makes it pleasant to carry and use one-handedly. While using the phone, the rounded corners won’t pierce your palms. The frame is plastic and doesn’t seem particularly high-end to the touch.

The Oppo Reno 8 5G has a large 6.4-inch display on the front, with a cutout for the selfie camera in the top-left corner. Except for the chin at the bottom, it has relatively narrow bezels that contribute to an immersive experience. For protection, Oppo has covered the display with Corning Gorilla Glass 5.

The Reno 8 5G weighs only 179g, making it lightweight and unfatiguing for prolonged use. It is simple to access the power and volume controls because they are placed close to the middle of the frame on either side. These buttons offer a comforting click that reduces input uncertainty. Only the secondary mic is present on the top of the frame. The primary microphone, speaker, and USB Type-C connector are all located at the bottom, along with the SIM tray.

The Shimmer Gold version does a good job at obscuring fingerprints. Triple cameras are set up at the rear of the Oppo Reno 8 5G, and the module is molded into the back panel. Huge cutouts for the camera lenses make the camera module obvious. I am reminded of the OnePlus Nord 2T by the design.

Key Features

An AMOLED display with a full-HD+ resolution, 90Hz refresh rate, and 180Hz touch-sampling rate is included on the Oppo Reno 8 5G. Although the Motorola Edge 30 and other similar smartphones provide a greater 144Hz refresh rate, the OnePlus Nord 2T also boasts a 90Hz refresh rate.

The MediaTek Dimensity 1300 SoC, an octa-core SoC with a 3GHz clock speed, powers the Oppo Reno 8 5G. You can increase the RAM up to 5GB using a function that allows for RAM expansion. Given that it cannot be expanded, the smartphone’s restricted storage space can worry some users. Oppo might have provided a model with more storage.

The tray has a rubber ring around it to provide some ingress protection from dust and water, and you get two nano-SIM slots. The Reno 8 5G is not formally IP certified, though. Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.3, NFC, dual-5G standby, and dual-4G VoLTE are all supported. Six satellite navigation systems are also present. A 4,500mAh battery that supports 80W fast charging powers the Reno 8 5G. A significant bonus is that Oppo includes a suitable charger in the box.

On top of Android 12.1, ColorOS 12.1 is installed on the Oppo Reno 8 5G. When I wrote this Oppo Reno 8 5G review, it was using the July 2022 Android security patch. Preinstalled applications on the phone include Byju’s, Dailyhunt, FinShell Pay, HeyFun, Josh, Moj, Netflix, Paytm, Snapchat, and a few others. The majority of these programs allow for removal. Through the Theme Store app, Oppo provides a variety of customization possibilities. Additionally, you have the choice of altering the accent colors to match the color of your wallpaper.

With Oppo’s addition of Air Gestures, users may operate their smartphone with hand gestures rather than touching the screen. This function, in my opinion, is gimmicky and doesn’t perform as intended. Still available are customary gestures like the three-finger snapshot, double-tap screen wake-up, and flip to mute incoming calls, among others.

Oppo Reno 8 performance over 5G

During my use, the Oppo Reno 8 5G provided a fluid experience with no latency or stuttering. Multitasking was possible with ease thanks to the internal 8GB RAM and the 5GB of storage designated as RAM. Additionally, I did not have to wait too long for the apps to load. Both face recognition and the in-display fingerprint authentication were consistently rapid.

Both the AMOLED display’s clarity and viewing angles were excellent. Dual speakers would have enhanced the movie watching experience, however the Reno 8 5G only has a single bottom-firing speaker. Fortunately, the lone speaker can be heard clearly. The 90Hz display made menu navigation feel slick. You do have the choice to change the panel’s default setting of 90Hz to 60Hz. Choosing a dynamic refresh rate is not an option. Throughout the course of this evaluation, I utilized the phone at a 90Hz frequency. The Reno 8 5G managed to achieve scores of 603 in the single-core test and 2,522 in the multi-core test on Geekbench 5. The Reno 8 5G scored 592,361 points on AnTuTu. The phone achieved 60 frames per second in the T-Rex and 41 frames per second in the Car Chase test suites of the graphics benchmark GFX Bench. These test results closely resemble those of the OnePlus 2T 5G review. Performance-wise, the Motorola Edge 30’s Qualcomm Snapdragon 778G+ SoC was also competitive.

Battery life

The battery life was excellent, and with my usage—which typically included perusing Instagram, Reddit, responding to WhatsApp messages, and watching YouTube videos—I could easily go up to two days. The phone impressively ran for 22 hours and 48 minutes during our HD video loop test. The included 80W charger made it possible to reduce charging times. In less than 40 minutes, it was able to fully charge the phone after charging it to 84 percent in less than 30 minutes.

Oppo Reno 8 5G Cameras

A triple camera arrangement is used on the Oppo Reno 8 5G. It has a Sony IMX766 sensor-equipped 50-megapixel main camera. Numerous smartphones, like the Nothing Phone 1 review, Realme GT Neo 3, OnePlus 10T, and even the Oppo Reno 8 Pro 5G, use this camera sensor. This camera’s primary camera lacks OIS and instead depends on EIS. The other cameras are a 2-megapixel macro camera and an 8-megapixel ultra-wide-angle camera with a 120-degree field of view. The Oppo Reno 8 5G has a 32-megapixel selfie camera for taking pictures of oneself. I had no trouble using the camera app.

Photos taken with the primary camera were vividly colored and highly detailed. The Reno 8 5G was able to catch colors properly even under intense lighting. The quality of the images from the ultra-wide-angle camera was marginally lower than from the main camera. However, there was no barrel distortion, and there wasn’t much variation in the color tones. An AI scene optimization feature in the camera app increases color saturation to produce photographs with more vibrancy.

Oppo Reno 8 5G Price in India

The cost of the only Oppo Reno 8 5G option with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage is Rs. 29,999. The phone is available from Oppo in two finishes: Shimmer Black and Gold. The Mi 11X 5G and the OnePlus Nord 2T 5G are competitors in terms of cost.

Oppo Reno 8 5G review and Verdict

A decent smartphone with good hardware, the Oppo Reno 8 5G costs less than Rs. 30,000. It boasts comparable performance to other products in the segment, good cameras, and reasonable pricing. Although ColorOS includes many useful features, those who want a pure Android experience may find the amount of included bloatware to be inconvenient. The absence of OIS has a negative impact on camera performance as well, especially when taking pictures in low light.

The Reno 8 5G has its work cut out for it given the number of smartphones that have released in this price range in the last year. The closest rival is the OnePlus Nord 2T 5G, which shares almost all of the hardware of the Reno 8 5G. Similar in price, the Motorola Edge 30 focuses on a thin design, has a 144Hz refresh rate display, and runs a crisp, vanilla version of Android. If you’re only looking for solid performance at this price, the Mi 11X 5G is another option to consider.
