What does Black Spot on the Sun Mean?
Recently, some black spot on the Sun showed up . This has gotten the attention of scientists and astronomers, who are especially interested in this event. But this has happened before. The black spot on the sun come and go in cycles and have been seen before.
So, what is it this time that has experts so interested? What’s happening is that the black spots on the sun are much bigger than they were in the past, which has gotten a lot of people’s attention. But let’s start at the start.
Why does the sun have these black spots?
When black spots are seen on the sun, this is called a sunspot. Sunspots have been happening in cycles for many years and show that the temperature of the hottest star in the galaxy is changing, which has a direct effect on our daily lives.
Sunspots happen at the Sun’s surface when the temperature changes. In other words, sunspots are cooler than the Sun itself, but they are still usually around 4000oC, just to remind us how hot the Sun is. And if you’ve already forgotten, you can look at these high-definition pictures that zoom in on the Sun and show how big it is.
The number and size of sunspots change based on solar activity like voltages, magnetic fields, flows of electrical charges, energy release, and even bursts of radiation called solar flares. Sunspots also show up, get bigger, change shape and size, and then go away. This cycle usually lasts between one and two solar rotations, or one to two months, but its half-life is only about two weeks.
The case of AR3038
AR3038 is a sunspot that is getting a lot of attention right now because it is growing quickly and is already 2.5 times the size of the Earth after only 24 hours. To be more exact, the spot grew at least twice as big in 24 hours, reaching a diameter of 31,900 kilometers, which is more than twice the size of the planet.
Also, the spot on the Sun where it is is pointing right at Earth. Because of this, organizations that care about the climate are keeping an eye on the space environment to see if it changes. Since these spots are close to Earth, if they throw a flare, it could cause electromagnetic storms on Earth.
This is the Sun’s 25th cycle, which may have something to do with the fact that its activity has been getting stronger over the past few years, and the so-called AR3038 is one of the most complicated we’ve seen so far.
