The first trailer for Avatar: The Way of Water is finally here, and strangely, it has a lot of heat.
When we last saw Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) in the first Avatar, he had pretty much become the Na’vi’s savior after being adopted into their tribe, being forgiven for being a human spy, and deciding to side with the aliens in their fight against humanity to save Pandora. Jake was able to start a new life on Pandora with his chosen Na’vi mate, Neytiri (Zoe Saldaa), by moving his mind into the body of his human/Na’vi hybrid avatar. The atmosphere on Pandora is dangerous for humans.
In the first trailer for The Way of Water, Jake and Neytiri are back, but this time it’s not just the two of them. Between the first movie and The Way of Water, Jake and Neytiri have had children, and the trailer shows how the growth of Na’vi families will be important to the story. In the trailer, there are also shots of Jake and Neytiri caring for a child who looks like a human but has to wear a special mask to stay alive on the planet.
The presence of the human child raises some questions about how Earth reacted when the Na’vi stopped Earth from stealing Pandora’s valuable unobtanium, but it seems like humanity couldn’t be stopped in the end. The trailer shows a lot of new shots of the Metkayina reefs along the coast of Pandora. It also shows shots of Na’vi dressed in human-like combat gear and carrying guns, which suggests that humans are using avatars as weapons of war even more than before.
Even though the plot of The Way of Water isn’t clear from the trailer, all the pieces are there for a story about the Na’vi having to defend their homes again from resource-hungry invaders. With any other franchise, a simple premise might not be enough to get people to the theater, but Avatar: The Way of Water has been getting a lot of attention before it comes out, so it might be enough.
On December 16, Avatar: The Way of Water comes out in theaters.
