Facebook Blames ‘Faulty Configuration Change’ for Largest-Ever Crash

Facebook experienced its largest outage ever, with WhatsApp, Instagram, Messenger, and even Facebook’s internal tools all being unavailable for over six hours on Monday night. The social media behemoth blamed the outage on changes to router configurations that coordinate network traffic for the outage across all of its sites. In a blog post, Facebook vice president of infrastructure Santosh Janardhan said, “This disruption in network traffic had a cascading effect on the way our data centers communicate, bringing our services to a halt.”

In a late Monday blog post, the corporation did not say who made the configuration modification or whether it was planned. There are rumors, however, that the outage was caused by an internal error.

What we know about Facebook’s biggest ever crash is as follows:

Facebook and all of its platforms — WhatsApp, Instagram, Messenger, Oculus, and the company’s internal tools — fell out for six hours on Monday.
Due to this problem, the company’s own internal tools and even offices that required security badges became inaccessible, causing more disruption and delays in finding a solution.
According to a Reddit user claiming to be an insider, the lesser staffing in data centers owing to pandemic preparations made it more difficult to implement the update.
Facebook blamed the problem on a faulty configuration change, but provided no other information.
Simply said, routers are used to coordinate data within Facebook, and a change in their settings prevented Facebook’s computers from communicating with one another. According to an insider’s post on Reddit, DNS, the “address book” that is used to discover Facebook services on the Internet, was down due to a botched BGP update (Border Gateway Protocol), which is required to transfer data to the correct location.
Jonathan Zittrain, director of Harvard’s Berkman Klein Center for Internet and Society, tweeted, “Facebook simply locked its keys in its car.”
Facebook’s stock dropped 4.9 percent today, its worst daily decrease since November.
Facebook Chief Technology Officer Mike Schroepfer wrote, “I’m sorry to every little and large business, family, and individual who relies on us.”
Twitter reported higher-than-normal usage as a result of Facebook’s outage, which caused some difficulty with individuals viewing posts and direct messages.
Signal benefited from the WhatsApp outage as well, claiming that millions of new customers signed up on Monday as a result of the outage.
