Melbourne Cup: Five of The Most Memorable Winners

Melbourne Cup

The Melbourne Cup is commonly referred to as the “race that stops a nation”. Laden with drama and sometimes controversy, the Melbourne Cup – which is run annually on the first Tuesday of November – continues to enthral racegoers and racing enthusiasts.

Punters who are eager to place a few bets will be able to locate Betdaq horse racing tips for this prestigious event, and you do get some upsets.

There have been some magical moments over the years at the Melbourne Cup, and we have pinpointed five of our most memorable winners.

Archer (1862)

Ok, we did a bit of digging in the archives to find this one! The inaugural Melbourne Cup was run in 1861 and it was won by Archer, who was a classy thoroughbred. Run in front of 4,000 fans, Archer enjoyed a six-length victory over Mormon, although it was a rather pedestrian time of 3 minutes and 52 seconds.

And Archer came back the following year as the firm favourite. Once again, it was a familiar tale, as Archer cruised to a winning margin of eight lengths to etch his name into Melbourne Cup folklore. A fabulous horse that truly put the race on the map.

Phar Lap (1930)

Perhaps one of the greatest racehorses in arguably one of the most challenging handicap flat races, Phar Lap made it look very easy.

With a starting price of 8/11 – the shortest ever starting price for the favourite – Phar Lap, who weighed 63kg, won the race at a canter. What was even more remarkable was that gangsters tried to take out Phar Lap by firing bullets at him while he was going through some last bits of training ahead of the race.

Might And Power (1997)

One of only two horses to capture the Caulfield, Melbourne Cup, and Cox Plate, Jim Cassidy electrified the crowd at the Melbourne Cup on board Might And Power.

Might And Power was relentless and would leave his rivals biting the dust. Described by many in the racing fraternity as a “beast”, the horse lived up to the hype, as he stormed to a seven-and-a-half length victory.

Although Might And Power was retired in 1999, his explosive Melbourne Cup won’t be forgotten about!

Makybe Diva (2005)

One of just 13 mares to win the Melbourne Cup, Makybe Diva is the most famous of them all. There was something remarkable about her, and she won back-to-back titles in 2003 and 2004.

Yet Makybe Diva went a step further in 2005. Although she was a doubt ahead of the meet at Flemington due to the firmness of the track, she pushed that to the back of her mind as she won the race to complete an unprecedented treble.

When you factor in that she was carrying an extra 0.5kgs in weight, Makybe Diva was a true superstar.

Prince of Penzance (2015)

It’s not often that a long shot wins the Melbourne Cup, and coming into the race priced at 100/1, very few fancied Prince Of Penzance in 2015.

But Prince Of Penzance silenced his detractors, and he became the fourth horse at 100/1 to win the Melbourne Cup. Also, it was the first time the blue-riband event had been won by a female jockey.
