Vampires as we know them today may be traced back to Bram Stoker’s Dracula, a novel in which the Count (influenced by Romania’s infamous Vlad the Impaler) devoured human blood and finally sought to recapture the woman he loved and lost. Its history extends back to the Middle Ages, when, in the absence of scientific explanations, stories and legends began to circulate about animals who stole the blood of humans, causing them to become ill and eventually die.

As with witchcraft, many people were accused of being vampires, and all of this contributed to the formation of the classic monster of literature and film, which, despite its evolution, always retains certain characteristics, such as its inability to go out in the sun, touch silver, or survive a stake through the heart.

The creator of The Haunting of Hill House, Mike Flanagan, is responsible for this series set on a small island with a strongly devout population. The story begins with the arrival of a new priest who convinces everyone that he can perform miracles, but in reality hides a bloody secret that puts everyone in danger and leaves them at the mercy of a monster. Few island residents learn that the priest is not who he seems to be, but they are determined to thwart his schemes before it’s too late.

The Strain (Star+)

This series, developed by Guillermo del Toro, depicts vampires as part of an epidemic that is progressively wiping out humanity. In the middle of the carnage, an expert and a few survivors manage to hide, and they must find a means to end the plague and the evil force that has invaded the city before it spreads to the rest of the globe. There are numerous references to the iconic monster designs of the Mexican director.

What We Do in the Shadows (Star+)

Based on the Taika Waititi film of the same name, this comedic series imagines what modern vampires’ lives would be like. Staten Island is home to a group of vampires in their twenties who live as roommates. They must now cope with millennials, social media, and technology, which provides them with more issues and makes them understand that no one fears them as much as they once did.

Dracula (Netflix)

Claes Bang (from The Northman) portrays the iconic Count Dracula in this BBC series. The story begins in the late 1800s, when Dracula terrorizes the people of Transylvania. Immortals (Netflix)

This series originates in Turkey. The story begins in 19th-century Istanbul, when we encounter a group of vampires that make it to the present day. The story follows Mia, a woman who was turned into a vampire, as she searches for a mysterious ancient artifact that can offer her immortality and forms a group to help her defeat the monster that converted her.

Penny Dreadful

This series stars Eva Green, Josh Harnett, and Timothy Dalton as some of the most iconic literary monsters. Vanessa Ives, a lady marked by a demon, must assist Sir Malcolm Murray in rescuing her vampire-kidnapped daughter, while confronting witches, immortal beings, and terrible powers that seek to destroy humanity.

First Kill (Netflix)

This story (with echoes of Romeo and Juliet) is based on the novel Heather Brewer and follows a teenage vampire who falls in love with a monster hunter. Even though her families are rivals, they must learn to work together in order to eliminate the monsters that have been released in their city.

The Vampire Diaries (Netflix)

The Vampire Diaries is the fandom-obsessed fan favorite. The Vampire Diaries is a soapy, dramatic, and occasionally bloody television series about a girl who falls in love with two vampire brothers. The ensuing love triangle is likely the longest will-they-won’t-they in the history of CW dramas.
