5 Myths You Should Stop Believing to Control Diabetes
In simple terms, a diabetes diet entails eating healthful foods at the appropriate times and in the specified amounts. The diet’s main goal should be to control your blood sugar levels. When you have diabetes, it might be difficult to know what to consume and what to avoid. The foods you eat, the times you eat them, and the number of your portions all have an impact on your blood sugar levels. There are various diabetic diet myths that can have an impact on blood sugar levels. These can also cause diabetics to shun foods that are perfectly healthy to eat in moderation. In a recent Instagram post, dietician Lovneet Batra debunked some diabetic diet myths. Here are all of the typical misconceptions debunked.
Diabetes diet: Common diabetes diet myths busted
According to Batra, “Despite the fact that diabetes is relatively common, there are still a lot of misconceptions regarding its causes, treatments, and how living with diabetes impacts your daily life. Bust the myths, and you’ll be on your way to better disease management.”
1. Diabetics cannot eat carbs
It’s a popular misconception that diabetics can’t eat carbohydrates. According to Batra, “Carbs are not your adversary. For individuals with diabetes, it’s not so much about the carbs themselves as it is about the sort of carb, the amount of carb you eat, and the timing.” You should avoid high-carb foods, especially refined carbs like spaghetti, white bread, cereal, and others.
2. Diabetics can have as much ‘fat’ as they want
Fats should be a part of your diet, but only if they are healthy fats. Eating a lot of saturated fat-rich foods, according to the dietician, can elevate harmful cholesterol levels and increase the risk of heart attack and stroke.
3. Opting for artificial sweeteners are a safer choice
Artificial sweeteners designed specifically for diabetics abound on the market. However, according to Batra, “artificial sweeteners may increase insulin resistance.” She goes on to say that just because something is labeled “sugar-free” doesn’t mean it’s any better; it could still contain a lot of unwanted ingredients, including harmful chemicals.
4. If you are on medication, you can eat sweets
“Taking diabetic medicine does not entitle you to eat as much sugar as you want,” Batra explains. Diabetics must consume a nutrient-dense diet in addition to taking medication. This will aid in the control of blood sugar levels, as well as the risk of diabetes-related complications.
5. Fruits are bad for diabetics
People with diabetes assume they can’t consume fruits since they’re high in natural sugar. Fruits, on the other hand, are high in important nutrients and can be consumed in moderation. Consume entire fruits rather than juices.
Don’t be fooled by these diabetes urban legends! If you have any concerns, speak with your nutritionist or doctor.
