How to Manage Mental Health? Follow these 10 Tips

We all talk about mental health and its importance, especially in times of pandemic, but many of us do very little to manage or improve it on a daily basis. According to the World Health Organization, mental health is “a state of well-being in which an individual recognizes his or her own abilities, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively, and can contribute to his or her community.”

One of the causes of poor mental health is stress, and workplace stress, bereavement, separation, and financial problems can all contribute to it. According to research published by the American Psychological Association, mental health issues in children and adolescents have significantly increased, possibly as a result of the rise of electronic communication and digital media.

On a daily basis, there are a number of measures that can be taken to reduce stress and improve mental health. Exercising, getting enough sleep, eating well, meditating, and talking to a friend on a regular basis are all ways to look after your mental health.

Many factors influence mental health, including genetics or brain chemistry, trauma, and even a family history of mental health issues.

“Low energy, eating or sleeping too much or too little, not participating in activities, abusing alcohol or drugs, mood swings, panic attacks, shivers, and other symptoms are early warning signs of poor mental health. Anything out of the ordinary and extreme can help you identify poor mental health,” Dhruv Patel, mental health expert and founder of Ruhgu, agrees.

Patel also provides ten simple tips for managing your emotional health.

1. Keep a record of the good things

Keeping a gratitude journal can help you to reaffirm the positive aspects of your life. When you’re feeling down, you can remember them. Every day, write down three things for which you are grateful.

2. Workout

When you exercise, you release endorphins, which makes you feel good. Also, when you look good, you get a self-esteem boost and feel good.

3. Control your diet

Hand in hand with exercise, your diet can change the way you feel. Eating fruits, vegetables and getting enough water can serve as an easy pick-me-up.

4. Meditate

Take a few minutes at the beginning and end of every day to relax your mind and not think about anything. By leaving your thoughts at the door, you can deal with them one at a time.

5. Take a nap

You’ve probably heard the expression “sleep on it,” and that’s exactly what you should do. Sleep deprivation contributes to depression and poor decision-making.

6. Consult with your friends and family

If you are going through a difficult time, don’t be afraid to share it with someone close to you. Seek support and advice from friends or family members.

7. Invest in your hobby

You almost certainly have something you want to do but never do. So, make time for your hobby, whether it’s reading, art, sports, or even the crossword puzzle. Even if you’re not particularly good at it, your hobby can boost your self-esteem.

8. Do something nice for someone else

When you do something for someone else without expecting anything in return, whether it’s cleaning the house or cooking a meal for your family, their gratitude can make you feel like you’re on top of the world.

9. Play soothing music

Listening to calming sounds, such as nature sounds, instrumental music, and peaceful chants, has been shown to reduce stress and anxiety and even change your mood.

10. Ask for help

If all else fails and you are unable to manage your mental health, seek the advice of a professional. You are not alone, so don’t be afraid.
