How to Make Extra Income as A Student
One of the most important aspects of being a student is learning how to sustain yourself and become independent.
A key element of this independence is the process of paying your own way and finding creative ways of earning yourself income alongside your studies. Apart from helping to pay for your university fees, earning additional income can transform your university experience, from imposing severe budgets and worrying about bills to being able to pay your rent on time every month, go out with your friends during the evenings and lead a rounded, healthy lifestyle.
Of course, finding ways of generating income is not easy, especially as a student.
With most of your days taken up with lectures, seminars and studying, finding jobs that give you enough flexibility is challenging. This is why becoming skilled in a certain area (especially if it relates to your degree) can help you find work. You could, for example, become a freelancer, which allows you to determine your own hours and earn good money for relatively little work time.
Alternatively, you could complement your studies with a paid internship relating to your course, pursue a more traditional route by working for a local business, or even sell possessions that you no longer need – such as your car or old clothes you no longer wear.
This is how to make extra income as a student:
Work as a freelancer
One of the best ways of earning additional income as a student is to find work as a freelancer. This option will require a substantial amount of work up front, but the rewards can far outweigh the effort.
To become a freelancer, you need to choose a particular skill to become proficient at. If your course naturally gives you a useful skill set – such as if you are studying English, math, marketing or business, for example, then you could quickly accrue some more specialized knowledge and become a freelancer.
When you are a freelancer, you can earn a competitive wage and set your own workload and hours, which is ideal if you have to fit it around your studies.
Of course, if you want to become a freelancer then you will need to invest in a high-quality laptop. Thankfully, there are many cheap laptops for students, as long as you search around for discounts.
Find a job in a local business
If you are looking for a more accessible way of making additional income as a student, then finding a job in a local business is a good route to take.
Look around your local area for job vacancies, check online notice boards and apply to company websites that operate near you. There will certainly be opportunities all around, but they may require you to think outside the box and be persistent.
Sell items you no longer need
Another option could be to sell valuable items that you no longer need. The most obvious example would be your car or bike if you no longer use them, or even items of clothing you no longer want or need.
Indeed, due to the rise in popularity of second-hand clothes stores online, you may find that certain clothing will be worth a notable amount of money. You could even turn it into a business, buying and selling second-hand clothes for profit.
Undertake a paid internship
Alternatively, if you want to make a head start in your career then applying for a paid internship would offer you a great deal of value. Although increasingly rare, paid internships give you both invaluable first-hand experience in your chosen industry, a foot in the door for a future job, and a regular income.
