Google TV Plans to Add Free, Ad-Supported Live TV Channels

In the near future, Google is expected to introduce free TV channels to its Google TV platform. Google TV is an Android-based smart TV platform that works with Chromecast and some Sony, TCL, and other smart TVs. Google TV now supports a number of streaming apps, like Disney+, Hotstar, Netflix, and others, and it is rumored that it will soon add free TV channels to the mix. According to reports, Google is in discussions with companies that distribute free and ad-supported streaming television networks.

According to Protocol, which cites industry sources, free streaming channels might debut on Google TV this autumn or alongside its smart TV partners in 2022. Chromecast owners will be able to browse channels through a dedicated Live TV menu with this upgrade. This menu currently solely offers premium TV options, such as YouTube TV subscriptions. Along with these subscription-based live channels, the new free TV channels will be available.

These channels may have the appearance and feel of regular, linear television networks, including ad breaks and on-screen graphics, according to the research. These attempts are comparable to what Samsung offers on its smart TVs with its monthly TV Plus service. Samsung is said to stream “billions of minutes” of linear television every month through this service, which includes free streaming channels.

Even Roku and Amazon are said to have followed Samsung’s lead in bringing live channels on their devices. Roku, which is not available in India, is believed to have added more than 200 free channels to its platform. Most smart TV manufacturers today aim to include free streaming channels in their program guides so that users may simply switch between streaming and live TV. Chromecast users will benefit from the addition of free live channels to Google TV.

In September of last year, Google TV was unveiled as a new interface based on Android TV. It comes with features like tailored For You suggestions across subscriptions and the ability to build a Watch List to which you can add movies and series from anywhere on your phone or laptop using Google Search.
