Covid-19 Vaccines do not Affect Fertility or Pregnancy: Study
The influence on pregnancy and fertility is one of the most common fears and doubts that makes individuals think twice about getting vaccinated. In a new study, researchers discovered that COVID-19 vaccination had no effect on reproductive outcomes in patients undergoing in-vitro fertilization (IVF).
The findings, which were published in the Green Journal‘s ‘Obstetrics & Gynecology,’ adds to the expanding body of evidence that COVID-19 vaccine has no effect on fertility.
Researchers from the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai (Icahn Mount Sinai) in New York City and Reproductive Medicine Associates of New York (RMA of New York) compared rates of fertilization, pregnancy, and early miscarriage in IVF patients who had received two doses of Pfizer or Moderna vaccines to the same outcomes in nonvaccinated patients.
“This is one of the largest studies looking at fertility and IVF cycle results in COVID-19 vaccine recipients. There were no significant changes in ovarian stimulation response, egg quality, embryo development, or pregnancy outcomes between vaccinated and unvaccinated patients, according to the study “Devora A. Aharon, MD, the study’s first author, noted
Dr. Aharon, who is a fellow in reproductive endocrinology and infertility at Icahn Mount Sinai and RMA of New York, stated, “Our findings that immunization had no impact on these outcomes should be reassuring to those who are trying to conceive or are in early pregnancy.”
Patients whose eggs were retrieved from the ovaries and fertilized in a laboratory with sperm, resulting in embryos that were frozen and later thawed and transferred to the womb, as well as patients who received medical treatment to encourage egg development, were included in the study. The rates of pregnancy and early pregnancy loss were identical in the two groups of patients who underwent frozen-thawed embryo transfer: 214 vaccinated and 733 unvaccinated.
The two groups of patients who had ovarian stimulation—222 who had been vaccinated and 983 who had not—had equal rates of eggs retrieved, fertilization, and embryos with appropriate chromosomal numbers, among other things.
The study’s authors hoped that the findings might help people who were thinking about getting pregnant feel less anxious. “We can comfort patients of reproductive age and empower them to make the best decisions for themselves by combining science and big data. It will give people peace of mind to know that the COVID-19 vaccine has no effect on their ability to reproduce “Senior author Alan B. Copperman, MD, FACOG, director of RMA of New York and division director and clinical professor of obstetrics, gynecology, and reproductive science at Icahn Mount Sinai, said
Between February and September 2021, the participants in the research were treated at RMA of New York. Patients receiving IVF treatment are continuously monitored, allowing researchers to collect early data on embryo implantation as well as pregnancy losses that may go unnoticed in other trials.
The new study was released at the same time as the outbreak of the highly contagious Omicron strain. Previous research has found that COVID-19 vaccination helped protect pregnant women from severe illness, conferred antibodies to their infants, and did not increase the risk of preterm birth or fetal growth problems, despite the fact that COVID-19 significantly increases the risk of severe illness and death.
