Corporate Clothing: Business Attire in The Age Of Remote Working
One of the more unusual, unexpected, and unplanned changes that a lockdown environment has brought about has been in the way we dress for work. The age where ‘professionally’ dressed meant business suits or stock standard work clothing has been replaced by a new style, which in reality, is still a little undefined.
Loungewear, gym clothes, and PJs are seemingly the norm for the moment, but everyone is still rather uncertain if this new “work from anywhere” workwear is the new professional look or even acceptable in the current climate. Standards are busy evolving to a place where we will all know what is deemed ‘allowable’ to wear to a Zoom meeting or to the office. Looking a little further into the business attire dressing room mirror, perhaps we can figure out what will be hanging on the clothing rails and what you should have in your work wardrobe moving forward.
Let’s take a closer look at how corporate clothing is evolving in the age of remote working.
Changes In Dress Code Are Not Set In Stone
People who work remotely for companies with strict dress code policies, or have jobs where they used to be face-to-face with customers, may still be a little up in the air about updates regarding what is appropriate for work at this point. Before the mute button became everyone’s best friend, some corporations were experiencing issues with employees taking business calls from their ceramic ‘office’ seats or dealing with unexpected background noise.
As a result, most companies have established video conference etiquette policies. If you’re not sure what outfits to wear when working, this is a good place to start. By and large, it seems that how you look isn’t necessarily critical if you’re not visible on camera. Nonetheless, the unspoken rule is that the visible parts of your attire should appear professional if you are attending a video meeting.
As of now, remote work etiquette is somewhat a grey area. While your company may not yet have updated its dress code policy during the pandemic, to look professional in a meeting that is on camera certainly will not hurt your image. Although you don’t need to put on a three-piece suit, you can still put your best foot forward by appearing put together.
Work Attire And Remote Working
It has been more than twenty years after “tech-geeks” began their shift toward a non-traditionalist style in the workplace. Since then, smartphones, high-speed internet, oodles of computing power, and accessibility like never before have enabled many workers to work from practically anywhere, as long as there is access to the internet and electricity.
By cutting the physical connections that tie a worker to their desk, the remote worker was created. People who now challenge the meaning of business attire are looking for fashion choices other than a suit and tie.
Uncharted Waters For Everyone
The incredible advances in technology have made it increasingly difficult to tell whether remote workers are in the office or not. In the same vein, from the standpoint of a worker, it is not so clear that one is “working”. A typical workday might now include doing work activities, walking the dog, and eating lunch, followed by more work. Combining activities also means blending outfits. The remote worker is ultimately dressed in a way that accommodates all of his or her daily activities. Dress appropriately if you will be visiting clients on-site, and at least wear a collared shirt and jacket.
The Future Is Still Unknown In Terms Of Acceptable Remote Workwear
While many remote workplace dress codes are still unspoken, Zoom conferencing etiquette is definitely something that many companies have outlined. The new era of working from home has centred on comfort, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing. If you’re doing a wardrobe overhaul, choose clothes that you personally prefer, but don’t get so comfortable that you’ll have a video conference in your PJs.
