On March 8, International Women’s Day, Ultrasound AI Inc announced that it had been granted its first patent for Preterm AI, its newest predictive diagnostic tool (PAI).
Ultrasound AI is a Cloud-based artificial intelligence (AI) company based in Highlands Ranch, Colorado, that provides ultrasound imaging. PAI combines ultrasound technology with artificial intelligence to predict preterm birth and allow for earlier interventions.
When applied to real-world data in a clinical setting, PAI has demonstrated predictive values of more than 90% when predicting preterm and normal births.
Preterm birth (PTB) is a major and long-standing public health issue. It is the leading cause of neonatal mortality and long-term disabilities, with severe emotional and financial consequences for families and society. Because of the lack of prior pregnancy history, predicting PTB risk has been a particularly difficult problem for first-time mothers (nulliparous women).
Over $26 billion is spent each year in the United States on the delivery and care of 12 percent of preterm infants. One critical challenge for this field is identifying women who are at high risk of premature birth and developing interventions to address this risk. It is also critical to be able to identify women who are at the lowest risk of having a preterm birth in order to avoid unnecessary and costly interventions. PAI offers a potential solution to both problems by detecting the risk of preterm birth in women who may or may not have any known risk factors and alerting physicians to intervene early to prevent preterm birth.
