What to do If The Username I Want is Not Available

When you’ve started a new business or company, coming up with the perfect name is a fun and exciting time. You have the opportunity to establish a brand however you’d like. If you’ve thought of the correct name, learning your username isn’t available is heartbreaking. You want a name that flows with your business, not something generic and dull. Here’s what you need to do if the username you’ve set your heart on isn’t available:

Try filing a claim on the platform

Most popular social media channels can report a profile, page, or contact for imitating a business or person. If you’ve trademarked your company name, attempting to transfer a social media account may be successful by filing a claim online. These may include registering a trademarked business name, although it’s imperative to remember multiple companies with the same name exist globally. While you may own the trademark in the United States, it doesn’t protect you against foreign countries.

If the profile you’re attempting to secure is a legitimate business in another country where you’re not protected, there’s nothing you can do to shut it down. Business owners need to register their trademark in every country where protection is sought.

To file a claim, click on the profile in question and hit the report button. If you can’t find the reporting section, try visiting the help sections of the website. You’ll want to submit a claim that the profile is imitating or infringing on you or a company’s identity. These claims can take considerable time and energy, especially when shutting down or removing a profile. Suspended or black-listed profiles are also not available for registration; if the company suspends them, you may lose the handle permanently.

Reach out to the account

Although it’s an unlikely approach, contacting the account owner should always be your first attempt at securing the username in question. Take a look at the profile and assess the level of activity.

Ask yourself the following questions:

– Does the account holder use this account?

– How many followers or subscribers do they have?

– Is this a personal or business account?

– Do I have the funds to buy the account, if necessary?

– How much value do I place on the account for my company?

– Have I used a username checker to investigate availability online?

– Are other social media networks available if they decide to sell?

– How strong am I at negotiating?

Keep in mind that every social media platform may have different registrations. Successfully purchasing the username on Instagram may not prove successful on TikTok or Facebook. It’s important to assess how many social media platforms have your username available before contact. If every platform is unavailable, you’ll need solid negotiation skills and a deep wallet to secure the accounts.Go back to the drawing board

Sometimes, it doesn’t matter how great a username is; you just have to let it go. A username is the first impression of your business; it can strengthen your brand and improve your authority. Here are a few tips for choosing a powerful username for your social media accounts.

  • Spelling errors or abbreviations can influence your brand’s perception.
  • Always avoid using your first and last name in the username whenever possible (unless you are the brand).
  • Using your first name is appropriate if you’re directly connected to the business. For example, if you’re a real estate agent, using your first name is fine.
  • Don’t use words that stand for other signs or symbols. One example would be the word ‘at,’ which could include the word or the character.
  • Including a qualifier is appropriate if you’re connecting them to your business. Such examples can include the industry, location, or keywords for your company.
  • Never use slang, derogatory language, slurs, or curse words. Keep the username professional and upbeat.
  • Pick a professional name and stick to it. You’ll want to establish a consistent brand online and offline. Pay attention to the length of your usernames; between eight and twelve characters is ideal.
  • Brainstorm key terms, phrases, or jargon from your industry. Try to incorporate some of them into a catchy username.
  • Avoid adding numbers or symbols to the end of your username. This can confuse viewers and make your brand seem generic.
  • Don’t limit your brand to a specific area or product. Although it may seem tempting to include your area or product line in your social media usernames, doing so can seriously limit your future expansion. Try to have a generic name that can grow with the company.
