Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that 40 people have been killed so far in Russia’s large-scale strike on Ukraine on Thursday morning. Around ten of those killed were civilians, AFP reports.
Several dozen individuals have been injured, according to Oleksii Arestovich, an assistant to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
According to Arestovich, the Russian strike on air bases and other military equipment failed to reroute the country’s troops. Ukraine has incurred losses, but they “aren’t major,” he said, adding that the Russian strikes “haven’t damaged the Ukrainian military’s fighting capability.”
Arestovich further claimed that Russian troops penetrated up to 5 kilometers (3 miles) into Ukrainian territory in the Kharkiv and Chernihiv regions, as well as perhaps other areas. “The destiny of the Ukrainian people depends on every Ukrainian,” he stated, appealing to individuals to come to the Interior Ministry’s assembly facilities if they can defend the country.

Ukrainian border guards posted footage of “Russian military vehicles moving in” earlier today, while large explosions were heard in Kyiv, Kharkiv, and Odesa in western Ukraine. Ukrainians fled some cities in response to the Russian threat, and European authorities declared Ukrainian airspace an active war zone.

According to the Associated Press, NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg described Russia’s large-scale strike on Ukraine as a “severe breach of international law” and a “serious threat to Euro-Atlantic security.” The partners are gathering to “discuss the implications of Russia’s provocative conduct,” he added.
