How to Choose Window Replacement Units for Your Home

Window Replacement

Old warping windows reduce your home’s curb appeal, energy efficiency and can lead to high-energy bills. Besides, poorly working windows invite burglars, and they also give an entry to crawling animals, posing a danger to your family. To ensure this doesn’t happen to you, you need to carry out window replacement with new units.

There are many window styles in the market, and choosing a type, design, and window material can be overwhelming. New replacement window units such as wood, fiberglass, vinyl windows Oakville is expensive, and this is a significant investment that should be taken seriously. A little research on windows will also help.

Should You Buy New Or Replacement Windows?

If it is your first time purchasing replacement window units, you might be torn between new and replacement windows if you don’t know the difference.

1. New Windows

New windows are installed in new construction buildings. Homeowners also use them when they want to change their current windows’ size and shape entirely. Meaning, they will destroy walls to get the perfect fit of window they want.

Installing new windows requires a contractor’s skill and will cost more than replacement windows because there is more labor. Also, a new construction window comes with a frame, jabs, and sills, unlike a replacement window.

2. Replacement Windows

These windows are installed to replace the existing window. They, therefore, should fit adequately in the existing space. When buying a replacement window, you can buy the window alone without a frame if your frame is in good condition.

Windows replacement units are easy to install because there is less labor involved, and some homeowners DIY the replacement window. They are very affordable compared to new construction windows.

Choosing A Window Style

Another challenge comes in when choosing an Oakville window style. Always ensure the window style you choose matches your home’s architectural design. Some of the styles you can choose from are;

1. Single And Double-Hung Windows

Single and double-hung windows replacement units are almost similar. The only difference is that single hung windows have sashes at the top and bottom, but only the bottom sash is operable. To open the window, you tilt the sash upwards.

On the other hand, a double-hung window has two sashes that are tiltable. You tilt the upper sash downwards and the lower sash upwards to open the window. These types of windows are preferred because of their ease to clean. They are also affordable, have energy efficiency, and provide lighting and ventilation to the house.

2. Casement Windows

Casements resemble a door. They are hinged on the sides and crank open like a single or double door. The windows provide unobstructed views and are also very energy efficient.

3. Awning Windows

Awning window replacement units are primarily found in rainy areas because they shield the house from rainwater. Their hinges are on the top part of the window and they open from the bottom. When they open, they look like an awning hence the name.

3. Slider Windows

You can buy slider windows if you don’t have enough space outside for awning and casement windows. They open by sliding on the left or right side into the wall. These windows are energy efficient and are suitable for ventilation and lighting.

Window Materials

First, research the window replacement materials available before settling on one. Check their features, pros, and cons. However, as far as the materials are involved, consider what you can afford. The standard type of window materials are;

1.Wood

Wood windows are the most common, and they have been in existence since time immemorial. Nothing beats the natural look of wood, hence their popularity. Wood is also durable and has energy efficiency. However, the windows are prone to water, and when exposed, they swell and warp.

2. Vinyl

Vinyl windows are known for energy efficiency. These windows are made from a mixture of materials, so they are solid and durable. The windows are also easy to maintain and affordable.

3. Fiberglass

Fiberglass windows resemble vinyl ones and have similar characteristics. However, fiberglass is more energy-efficient, and the windows are very durable. The windows are slightly more expensive, but they will last a long time.
