Humans (2015-2018)

Humans may not be completely unique, but the parts together make a beautiful sound. This is what a British family did. They bought an artificially intelligent robot called a “synth” to help with their busy lives. One of the best things about humans is how they treat robots that might be dangerous or smart. At the heart of the story is a sweet friendship between the family’s youngest daughter and Gemma Chan’s beautiful and efficient synth Anita. A mystery leads the family to the robots’ origins, where they learn about things like humanity, pain, memories, and reality.

Electric Dreams (2017-2018)

Philip K. Dick’s works are the source of the anthology series Electric Dreams, and each episode is a vibrant, polished piece of work that whirls around the ideas of Dick’s work. The anthology series is called Electric Dreams. Most anthologies have better episodes than worse ones, but if you want Black Mirror-style storytelling, let this reverie wash over you while you watch it.

The Man in the High Castle (2015-2019)

The Man in the High Castle imagines a different history where the Axis powers (Rome, Berlin, and Tokyo) win World War II in a different way. The series is based on a Philip K. Dick book about people in the 1960s who live in a world where Nazi Germany and the Empire of Japan rule the United States. But there’s newsreel footage of a world where Germany and Japan both lose the war, which makes some people angry and want to fight back. Ridley Scott, who made the movie, is in charge of The Man in the High Castle. This is very good TV because it’s well thought out and has a clear storyline.

Counterpart (2017-2019)

It stars J.K. Simmons playing another J.K. Simmons in the show Counterpart. Get excited for a moment. During the Cold War, the sci-fi thriller is about a lowly office worker who is fed up with his life. Then one day, he goes to work and meets himself, but in a better form from another world. Counterpart is a must-see because it has secrets, tense action, and a great performance by Simmons as both leads.

Tales from the Loop (2020)

This isn’t just another show about a small town where weird things happen. Tales from the Loop isn’t just pretty. The series is based on a book by a Swedish artist called Simon Stlenhag that tells a story. It’s beautiful to look at. A painting-like feel is given off by frames that are very precise and symmetrical. The stories of the people who live in the towns that are connected are just as complex. They talk about loneliness, aging, and the effects of technology.

Orphan Black (2013-2017)

It is Tatiana Maslany’s show in more ways than one. Before She-Hulk makes her a household name, watch her play 14 different characters in one show, including a scorpion who is hallucinating. Let that sink in for a moment. Using smart sci-fi ideas, Orphan Black turns into a fast-paced thriller, with added mystery and humor along for the ride. A must-see sci-fi show about the nature vs. nurture debate.

The Expanse (2015-2022)

Amazon saved The Expanse from TV shows that were canceled. The show now has six seasons. In the end, it was good that it did. The Expanse is a smart sci-fi show with real people and a little detective noir. An act of conspiracy could start a cold war between the two biggest countries in the future. Some bad guys are in the middle. Look for more space western themes in the show’s later seasons, which are always good.

The Feed (2019)

This British show about technology that goes wrong is bound to be compared to Black Mirror. Set in the future, The Feed is about an implant that lets people Livestream without having to press a button on their phones. It works like this: No, nothing goes wrong at all. David Thewlis and Michelle Fairley are part of an impressive cast. The Feed isn’t as well-made or deep-cutting as Black Mirror, but it’s still worth a look.
