NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope captured an image of a fascinating galaxy 130 million light-years away.
As seen in a recent Hubble photograph, NGC 5728 is a spiral galaxy comparable to the Milky Way, but with a very intense core. According to NASA, this is a type of galaxy with an “active galactic nucleus (AGN)”.
This powerful visible and infrared light was caught by Hubble’s irreplaceable Wide Field Camera 3 — installed by astronauts in 2009 during their last and final trip to service Hubble — which was installed by astronauts during their last and final journey to service Hubble.
Nonetheless, NASA adds that NGC 5728’s active core (packed with stars) emits far more light than Hubble (or us) can observe. In other words, the galaxy is emitting much more light at different wavelengths.

The James Webb Space Telescope, NASA’s next-generation space telescope, is scheduled to launch on Dec. 18. The telescope will peek at some of the universe’s earliest galaxies and watch planets developing in distant solar systems, with larger mirrors and a considerably higher resolution than Hubble.
