9/11 Attack: 20 Years Later, Toxic Dust Still Ails Americans

9/11 Terror Attack

Two planes collided with the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center in New York in 2001. Thousands of people were killed in the horrific assaults known as the 9/11 attack, and two decades later, people are still reporting diseases that may be linked to them, according to reports.

Several types of research have been undertaken throughout the years that have shown a link between an illness and an assault. A study published in the American Medical Association’s journal in 2012 identified a possible link between exposure to World Trade Center debris and an increased risk of cancer. The researcher discovered that the risk of prostate cancer, thyroid cancer, and multiple myeloma was much higher among rescue and/or recovery professionals in the study, Hindustan Times reports.

As a result, the United States launched the World Trade Center Health Program, which provides free medical care to persons suffering from health concerns linked to the dust. According to the Associated Press, the program has recruited more than 111,000 people, and the government has spent $11.7 billion on care and compensation for those who have been exposed to the dust.

According to the article, more than 40,000 people have received payouts from the fund for ailments that may be linked to the attacks.

The majority of persons participating in the federal health program have chronic inflammation of their sinuses or nasal canals, or reflux disease, which causes symptoms such as heartburn, sore throat, and a chronic cough.

Skin and prostate cancer are the most common cancers discovered in the aftermath of the attack, according to experts.

Nearly 19,000 World Trade Center Health Program participants have a mental health disorder that is thought to be linked to the attacks. Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) has been identified as the most common among survivors in this case.

Apart from this, the World Trade Center Health Program has identified rhinosinusitis, asthma, sleep apnea, respiratory disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, depression, and anxiety disorder as frequent disorders linked to the 9/11 attacks. The World Trade Center Health Program posts the most commonly certified condition on its website regularly.
