In India’s West Bengal, ten people were “burnt alive” in the early hours of Tuesday as goons went on a rampage, setting houses on fire to avenge the assassination of a ruling party politician.
Police said the atrocity occurred in West Bengal’s Birbhum district, around 200 kilometers from the state capital Kolkata, only hours after local Trinamool Congress lawmaker Bhadu Pradhan was slain in a crude bomb attack. West Bengal police commissioner Manoj Malaviya told the reporters in Kolkata that seven charred remains had been discovered in one of the four to five burned houses in the district’s Rampurhat region,.
Three more people died of their burn injuries at a nearby hospital, according to local TV channels, who broadcast footage of the burnt houses and stated, citing police sources, that three more people died of their burn injuries. ‘The situation has now been brought under control, and a police presence has been established in the area. “We’re looking into how the houses caught fire and whether it had anything to do with Pradhan’s death.” Malaviya remarked.

In fact, Mamata Banerjee offered a compensation of Rs. 2 lakh apiece for the relatives of the 16 victims on May 6, a day after she was sworn in as Bengal’s third chief minister. Mamata had appealed for calm and asked her followers not to engage in violence. ‘Bengal is a peaceful country. There was some heat, dust, and stillness during the elections. But I want everyone to be calm.’
Defying anti-incumbency, Mamata made history on May 2 by pulling off an incredible victory in the assembly election on her alone, fending off a major challenge from India’s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
