Lata Mangeshkar, a singing queen who enchanted millions with her voice for eight decades, was cremated in Mumbai on Sunday with full state honors. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi was among the politicians and celebrities who attended her funeral in the evening at Shivaji Park in the Dadar region.
After presenting her with flower tributes, Modi exited the venue. On behalf of President Ram Nath Kovind, floral tributes were also given to her at Shivaji Park. Hridaynath Mangeshkar, Lata’s brother, ignited the cremation pyre for the singing diva, who died at the age of 92 in a hospital here on Sunday morning after suffering from multi-organ failure.
The funeral was attended by Maharashtra state minister Uddhav Thackeray, deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar, NCP head Sharad Pawar, stars Shah Rukh Khan and Aamir Khan, cricketer Sachin Tendulkar, and MNS chief Raj Thackeray.
Lata Mangeshkar’s dead remains were transported on a truck from her home in south Mumbai to Shivaji Park for the funeral rituals, draped in the national flag. As the music queen proceeded on her farewell voyage, a massive crowd thronged the roadways where the cortege passed.
On social media, a number of celebrities paid respect to Lata. Anushka Sharma, a Bollywood actress, also rushed to Instagram to express her sadness, writing, “God communicates with us via beautiful voices.’ Our nightingale has left her mortal body, and it is a sad day for India. Lataji’s voice will be remembered for the rest of her life. Her music will keep her alive in our hearts. My heartfelt condolences go out to her family, friends, and admirers. Sachin Tendulkar said on Twitter, “I feel myself privileged to have met Lata Didi and to have been a part of her life. She was always full of love and blessings for me.
