Ukraine, the east European nation stated on Thursday that the European Union (EU) should officially recognize Putin as a ‘war criminal’, a day after US President Joe Biden dubbed his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin a ‘war criminal’ for authorizing Russia’s ongoing invasion of Ukraine.
In his address to EU legislators, Ukraine’s defense minister, Oleksiy Reznikov, said, “I’m asking to all European parliamentary members to recognize Putin as a war criminal.” Reznikov used Biden as an example, speaking via videolink.
“It’s not simply a war,” the minister added, referring to Russia as the “aggressor.” It’s a state-sponsored terror campaign. Their regular army is systematically destroying the civilian population. Since Russia’s invasion on February 24, more than 400 schools, 110 hospitals, and 1,000 residential complexes have been destroyed across Ukraine.”
Reznikov similarly voiced optimism that his country’s military will eventually succeed despite being outmanned and outgunned by Russian forces. “It’s merely a question of how much the Ukrainian people are willing to pay.” He appealed on the 27-nation bloc to equip Ukraine with more armaments, saying, “We can stop the Russians, but we need assistance.”
Meanwhile, Biden slammed Putin at a news conference on Wednesday, where he also pledged an additional $800 million in security assistance for Ukraine. The comments elicited a harsh rebuke from Moscow, which called it “unacceptable and inexcusable speech.”
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy delivered an impassioned speech to the US Congress on Wednesday as well. The US Senate had just voted a unanimous resolution calling Russian President Vladimir Putin a “war criminal.”
