Virat Kohli Breaks Another Record of Sachin Tendulkar

Virat Kohli of India scored two major goals against South Africa in the first ODI of the series on Wednesday in Paarl. Kohli broke two records in his first ODI since Rohit Sharma took over as full-time captain of the limited-overs team, passing Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly, and Rahul Dravid.

Soon after coming to bat in the 297-run chase, the former India skipper smashed Sachin Tendulkar’s record for most runs in away ODIs for the squad. Tendulkar scored 5,065 runs in away ODIs, and Kohli now ranks third on the all-time record of most away runs in the fifty-over format, surpassing the Indian legend. While Kumar Sangakkara (5,518) of Sri Lanka is far ahead at the top, Kohli has a chance to overcome Ricky Ponting (5,090) for second place.

Prior to the first ODI, the Indian captain had 1,287 runs against the Proteas, surpassing two Indian batting legends – Dravid and Ganguly – as he hit the 27th run of his innings. Only Tendulkar, who has 2,001 runs against South Africa in ODIs, has more runs than the former Indian skipper. Tendulkar’s record against the Proteas is also the best in the world.

Virat Kohli is currently the sixth-highest run-scorer against South Africa on the all-time list. Kohli is trailing Ricky Ponting (1,879), Kumar Sangakkara (1,789), Steve Waugh (1,581), and Shivnarine Chanderpaul (1,581). (1,559).

Kohli is not captaining the Indian squad for the first time in over five years, regardless of the format. The 33-year-old sent shockwaves through the cricket world last week when he revealed his decision to step down as the side’s Test captain. South Africa put 296/4 on the board in the first ODI, with skipper Temba Bavuma and Rassie van der Dussen making hundreds. The hosts had won the toss and elected to bat at Paarl, and the Indian bowlers, with the exception of Jasprit Bumrah, who was the most economical in the attack, were indifferent.

Venkatesh Iyer made his ODI debut in this match, while experienced off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin returned to the team after a four-year absence.
