Omicron XE: How Dangerous is the ‘Frankenstein’ Covid-19 Variant?

As limitations relax and mask demands fade, the Omicron XE variant spreads across the United States.

What to know about Omicron XE?

The XE variant was nicknamed a “Frankenstein” variant by Forbes writer Bruce Lee because it is a recombinant variant that combines the original omicron variant with the BA.2 variant, a subvariant of the original Omicron.

The latest Omicron XE COVID-19 variant has recently arrived in Japan after making its way through the United Kingdom.

  • The Omicron XE variant appeared among patients who were infected with two omicron variant strains at the same time, such as the original strain and the BA.2 variant.
  • In the pandemic, recombinants like these are not uncommon. Another example is the “Deltacron” version, which combines the Delta and Omicron forms into a single variant.
  • There’s also a risk that additional of these varieties will emerge.

Of Note: One thing is certain: “new recombinants and new versions of the SARS-CoV-2 will continue to appear like awful reality TV shows,” according to Forbes.

The Bigger Picture:

Despite the fact that new variants have appeared, the COVID-19 variant has encountered a bit of a pause in the United States.

  • The BA.2 variant has spread quickly, although it has done nothing to concern Americans in general.
  • After a federal judge in Florida invalidated the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s mask rule for public transportation and flights, the White House and the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) announced that the air travel mask regulation will not be implemented.

According to the Associated Press, the change was received with both excitement and concern, demonstrating that there is still discussion over how concerned people should be about the pandemic.

The Bottom Line:

“The development of the Omicron XE is a blunt reminder that the pandemic is not yet done.” according to Forbes. “And that you should continue to take necessary Covid-19 precautions, as you should have done all along.” according to Forbes.
