Squid Game is becoming a reality show. Netflix’s most-watched series is no longer a fictitious television show, thanks to the streaming service’s approval of “Squid Game: The Challenge,” dubbed “its biggest reality competition ever.”
Unlike in the series, where the stakes are life or death, the worst possible outcome in this 456-player competition is not winning the $4.56 million grand prize, which Netflix claims is the largest lump sum prize in reality TV history.
When it debuted in September 2021, Squid Game became Netflix’s most-watched series, telling the story of cash-strapped contestants who play childhood games for the chance to win life-changing sums of money.
The existence of Squid Game: The Challenge suggests that Netflix executives may have overlooked the entire point of the Squid Game show. Or they are content to have their cake and eat it as well.
According to Netflix, the first season is the most popular series of all time, with over 1.65 billion hours viewed in the first 28 days.
According to Netflix, the 10-episode reality competition Squid Game: The Challenge will include games inspired by the original show as well as new additions.
MrBeast, one of YouTube’s most popular American creators, did an unofficial iteration of this concept by recreating aspects of the South Korean drama’s set and hosting games from the show, such as “Red Light, Green Light.” The YouTuber also chose not to kill, but instead strapped a device to each of the 456 players that simulated a bullet shot when a player was ruled out.
Squid Game: The Challenge will be filmed in the United Kingdom and will initially only cast English speakers. The news comes just days after the scripted series was renewed for a Squid Game Season 2.
How to Apply for Squid Game: The Challenge Reality Show
Those living in the United Kingdom should visit this website to apply for a chance to compete in Squid Game: The Challenge. If you live in the United States, go to this site; if you live anywhere else in the world, go to this site.
To begin, you must meet the following requirements before applying:
- You must be at least 21 years old.
- Have the legal right to reside in the UK/US (UK and US applicants only)
- Be available to compete for up to four weeks, which is expected to begin in early 2023.
- Maintain a valid passport for the duration of the filming.
- Not employed or involved, or a relative of an employee or someone involved with All3 Media Group and/or Netflix.
If you meet all of the above requirements, you must then complete the form, which requests the following information:
- Full name
- Mobile phone
- Date of birth
- County/State (US and UK applicants only)
- Country (Global applicants)
- Nationality
- Password
You must also submit a one-minute video telling the casting team about yourself, why you want to be on Squid Game: The Challenge, your game plan, and what you would do with the money if you won. There are no filters on your video either.
The final step is to upload at least two photos of yourself, one headshot and one full length. You have the option of submitting three more. After that, you’ll have to wait to see if you get the green light to run.
