Deepika Padukone’s Movie Gehraiyaan Review

Gehraiyaan is like the rented yacht on which several of the film’s important sequences take place. It’s a smarty-pants, lathery romantic drama that labors under the misconception that it’s giving the genre a massive makeover. Despite its opulence, the film is lost at sea.

The hackneyed motif of crashing ocean waves is used to signify the increasing passion of two young people who break away from their chosen partners in Gehraiyaan, an Amazon original film, but the plot is about as deep as a muddy bog. It’s about people’s secrets and the lies they tell to hide their true selves. It sinks into a puddle of its own creating due to an uninspired, labored, and trite narrative.

It’s a 150-minute infomercial advertising the posh lifestyle of a group of attractive people with Bel Air airs but messed-up minds. One can’t help but think that if the text wasn’t so full of fluff, the production and costume designers wouldn’t have had to work as hard.

Life is all about choices, trust in yourself, give yourself a chance… Gehraiyaan’s airy-fairy aphorisms are as invigorating as WhatsApp good mornings. What a depth! The safety of shallow waters can be deceiving, especially when a film like this sets itself the goal of teaching the globe how to negotiate the waves when they get enormous.

Although the film is about a young, adventurous love, it is devoid of humour and zing. It falls flat when it tries to lighten up. As an example, consider the following: One of the characters adds, “Soch rahi hoon pottery lessons shuru karoon.” “Mujhe laga tu potty trained hai!” she elicits. Gehraiyaan goes to that level of depth.

The film begins as a story about a clandestine love affair gone horribly wrong, then gradually transforms into a half-baked drama about corporate overreach that harps on valuation gaps, bad loans, and unclean books, before taking on the contours of a dark take on the consequences of a clandestine love affair gone horribly wrong. A tottering triangle comes to a labored, unconvincing end, leaving one wondering what all the hoopla was about, thanks to an act provoked by lethal desperation.

Shakun Batra co-wrote Gehraiyaan, his third film, alongside Ayesha DeVitre Dhillon and Sumit Roy. There are four primary characters in the story. They go by the names Alisha, Tia, Zain, and Karan, which are all short and pleasant. Their paths, on the other hand, are winding and confusing. Confusion reigns due to their flaws and faults.

One of the two couples splits up, another begins a dalliance that swiftly gets serious, and a third is about to tie the knot. The quartet’s emotional flailing and heaving results in a hollow and repetitious rigmarole.

Three of them have known each other since they were children: Alisha (Deepika Padukone), Tia (Ananya Panday), and Karan (Dhairya Karwa). The fourth character, Zain (Siddhant Chaturvedi), Tia’s three-year boyfriend, is an outsider who brings cousins Alisha and Tia together on a yacht after a long separation.

Alisha, a yoga instructor, and Karan, an adman-turned-writer, have been together for six years, but Zain’s entry into the picture upsets the couple’s delicate balance – the former’s earnings cover the household bills, while the latter struggles to find inspiration for the first chapter of his first novel. Money also plays a role in Tia and Zain’s relationship. Zain’s real-estate dreams are fueled by the former’s bequest.

When temptation comes knocking on Alisha’s door in the form of Zain, she lets herself go with the flow, which results in a series of breathtakingly dull lovemaking sequences shot under the supervision of a “intimacy director.”

What would Gehraiyaan’s story of nefarious lovers have been like if they didn’t have dysfunctional families to blame for their rash decisions? Alisha, Tia, and Zain all have conflicts with their fathers or mothers. One grew up with an abusive, wife-beating father and a mother who was willing to put up with domestic abuse.

Another has a strained relationship with her cheese-farmer father (Naseeruddin Shah in one of his most underwritten cinematic parts ever), who has strayed away from his wife and daughter. Her mother advises a third not to be as trusting of her father as she was. It’s a merry-go-round, to be sure. However, Gehraiyaan’s circles aren’t quite merry.
